Good Morning,

The 2010 World Beer Cup was held last week in Chicago and San Diego brewers had another outstanding showing. This year saw almost 650 breweries representing 44 countries and entering more than 3300 beers in over 90 categories. And, as I said, San Diego brewers came back with the hardware: Ballast Point, with 3 gold medals, was named small brewery of the year; Alpine took a gold and two bronze, Alesmith grabbed a gold and a bronze, and the Pizza Port/ Port Brewing/ Lost Abbey gang flew home with 8 medals. Other winners included beers from Green Flash, Karl Strauss, Rock Bottom La Jolla and more. San Diego brewers won more medals than Oregon (ranked 2nd by state) and Germany (ranked 2nd by country) which kind of helps to legitimize all these crazy proclamations about San Diego being a pretty decent beer town. Congratulations to all. Now, back to work.

This Tuesday (the 13th; tonight) we’re very excited to be having an evening with Hildegard and Bas van Ostaden from the De Leyerth (Urthel) brewery in the Netherlands . Hildegard (she makes the beer) and Bas (an illustrator, he draws the gnomey ‘Urthels’ on the labels) are quite a charming pair, and meeting Hildegard could alter forever your ideas about brewers. We’ll be featuring 2 of her beers on draft- the Saisonniere, which is a delicious 6% abv hoppy farmhouse-style ale, and Hop-it!, a “Belgian IPA” which she brewed after she spent some time on the West Coast a couple of years ago and developed a liking for the hoppy IPA’s she drank here. Hop-it! Is 9% abv. As for the bottled beers, we’ll have the Hibernus Quentum (a 9% Tripel), the Samaranth Quadrium (Full-bodied and strong, at 11.5%) and the Vlaemse Bock (a 9% Flemish take on the German style). We’ll have these specially priced all night, and we’ll have glassware on hand as well. Don’t miss this chance to meet them both, they’re great fun. It starts at 5pm…we’ll see you here.

We also just got in a load of new Toronado gear, including a new style of American Apparel hoodies for the ladies that came out really cool, and plenty of short-sleeve T-shirts and hoodies for the guys. We know you’ve been waiting a while for these; come out tonight and have a beer with us. And stay tuned for our special Spring-Cleaning Bottle Sale… details coming soon.
