Does anyone know of a source to learn how distill alcohol? I realize that it's illegal to build or own a still, but I have always been curious about the process.

If I'm not mistaken, there is an old series of books called "foxfire" that tell you how to do so, and tell you how to do plenty of other things, too. (mostly legal)

P.S. It is legal, at least in most states, to own a still for distilling essential oils or water.

The pro brewers page www.probrewer.com has some great distillation links.

There is a great book called The Lore of Still Building, by Howard & Gibat. IT is real simple and to the point it talks about the laws, the process and even shows how to build several diferent types of stills.

This is an excellent page:

"Building a World Class Home Distillation Apparatus"

I have a book at home that I will try to remember to add here this afternoon, that uses what looks like the same stillheads detailed on the page above, but uses small electric water heaters for the boilers, instead of the milk can and the keg.

The book I referred to this morning is "Making Gin and Vodka - A Professional Guide for Amateur Distiller" by John Stone, ISBN number 0-9682280-0-3, 64 pages, first edition published in 1997, reprinted in 1999.
