Just found some specialty malts that I have had for over a year. They have all been sealed in either the vaccum package they came in from the brew shop or ziplocks. I want to put together a recipe and if I can avoid a trip to my local that would be great. What do you guys think about using specialty grain this old? All my base malt is new btw.

Happy new year!

Were they aleady pre-ground? If not, I say go ahead and use them. Especially since they usually only make up a very small percentage of the grist bill. Also, chew on a few grains and see how the both taste and feel. If they're a little soft, they've gone slack and generally won't be good to use.

yeah unfortunately they were cracked, they still taste good however. I am not sure I have enough of anything to rule out a trip to the store anyway so I may just chuck em. I already have allthe ingredients for my batch today. Was just hoping to brew again on Saturday without shopping.

If you don't have enough, you could always brew up a small batch. If it doesn't work, no big deal.
