Half Batch

I've just finished John Palmer's excellent book -- How to Brew -- and would like to start with his "sample" recipe (Cincinati Pale Ale, page 80).

My question ... how do I adjust his instructions for a "half batch"? He suggests a final volume of 5 gallons and a boil volume of 3 gallons. Do I just divide everything (except boil times) in half? For example, 1.5 gallon boil plus 1.0 gallon in the fermenter bucket and also 1/2 of the liquid and dry extracts and hops.

48 bottles of beer on the first batch is a bit much ... plus I'd like to brew more frequently (more practice and more experimentation). Thanks for the help.

If you can boil the whole thing (ie, the entire "half batch"), then do so.
You will get a better finished beer that way. If you can't boil the whole thing, then top up with dechlorinated water after you boiled what you could boil.

As far as dechlorinizing your water, if your city water uses chloramine instead of chlorine, then you should treat it with campden tablets (1 aspirin sized tablet treats 20 gallons of water, so you'll only need about a quarter tablet). Pre-boiling will drive off regular chlorine if that's what your city uses.
Palmer talks about chlorine at length in How to brew. You should review what he says as it will make a lot more sense than the short blurb I can give you here.

As far as the rest, just cut all the ingredients (malt, hops) in half and it'll work just fine.

I'm with you on the batch size. I just last night brewed 2.5g of "porter". It is all a matter of economies of scale. It takes no more effort to brew 5 gal than 2.5. And you'd be suprised at how quickly a well executed homebrew will disappear.

What ended up being a dark IPA was put in the primary tonight and once that goes to the secondary I have everything for an ESB to brew next. The pipeline has started! now I just need to find more bottles:D
