I started with a Mr. Beer kit back in 2002. Here's a thread I started a couple years ago on how to get good results with Mr. Beer.

Remember, the only guidelines you have to follow are the ones on sanitation! When it comes to taste, that is only important that you follow style guidelines if you plan to compete! So feel free to experiment with exotic ingredients, like Palm Sugar, Agave nectar,Molasses, etc Or spices, such as cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, coriander, etc the sky really is the limit! Heck If your a huge curry fan, try a curry pale ale, remember it only has to taste good to you unless you plan to enter competitions!

I didn't read all of Brewdog's thread, but down the road if you persue brewing and end up with equipment for a 5 gallon batch, you could always use the Mr Beer equipment for experiments like Vance's suggestions. Then if it wasn't what you thought the beer would taste like you only have to choke down 2 gallons. Or you could add 40% more ingredients to your partial boil and use both the Mr Beer and a 5 gallon bucket fermenter and make "7 gallon" batches. Just a thought.
