Never having been a fan of St. Arnold's products, with the sole exception of another seasonal, their Summer Pils, I decided that I would enter into trying this one with an open mind.
Poured a dark ruby color, much like Young's Oatmeal Stout, with a creamy, though not too thick head that disappated rather rapidly after the pour.
The initial nose was the warm, malty smell that one would expect with any stout, with a faint herbal fragrace as well.
First taste was the same as the initial nose, a warm, malty, almost earthy taste, reminiscent of Old Number 38 Stout without the sugary sweetness. Finished in that typical chocolate malt coffee like flavor. Excellent mouth feel, nice finish!
All in all, it seems that SA is in fact capable of brewing a fine product, as this was a very enjoyable stout. Too bad it is only available in the winter months. Also makes me wonder why their other products are not quite up to snuff. Far and away the best SA product I have ever had!
