You can save money by buying Dry Malt Extract in bulk. It stores well, and can be divided out into smaller amounts and packaged up in ziploc bags for easy storage.

Generally, bulk is the way to go on many things like PBW, and Star-San, too.
Check the shipping costs, too. Some sites have free shipping when you get over a certain amount.

Most of the EHBS don't carry the free shipping over to bulk ingredients. :(

Even if they dont have free shipping i would be happy finding a site that is cheaper on malt, and grain.

You can give this one a look. http://www.brewbrothers.biz/

They are local for me so I don't know about shipping. They have some of the best prices around here.

The cheapest place I've found for grain is Northern Brewer. I don't remember what the shipping ended up being, but I bought a 50 pound bag of 2row for $35.

I'm not sure how their smaller quantities of grain compare to other places but their bulk grain is deffinitely the cheapest I've found.

The biggest eHBS generally have some sort of flat rate shipping, I think morebeer my be the only one remaining that still have free flat rate shipping, but I could stand to be corrected. Generally I buy my base malt from brewpub who are willing to part with a sack or two, so why not switch to all grain?

with most eHBS the flat rate goes out the window when you order the bulk bags.

Vance,

Buddy up with the brewer at your closest craft brewery. They are usually willing to add a bag of grain to an order and pass it on to you for cost.

Northern Brewer charges a flat rate of 7.99 on most shipping cost, exception lies with certain equipment. I'm local to them and the store is really awesome, I've called a few times and asked questions in person Honestly felt like I was getting realy peer-to-peer customer service. As opposed to some other places (more local to my home town) where asking questions I usually get an awsner and feel less of a person after its explained.

I sometimes come away from Austin Homebrew feeling that way...

Thanks again, Lockwyn!!!!!
