When I brewed a couple of weeks ago, the plan was to brew an imperial stout. The recipe was as follows:
1.75kg Muntons Light DME
900g dark brown sugar
250g American chocolate malt
100g roasted barley
100g flaked oats
30g Galena @ 60
10g Fuggles @ 45
10g EKG @ 15
5g EKG @ 5
The projected OG according to Beertools.com was 1.089, but the measurement I took was for only 1.050. When I posted about this on a group on Facebook, it was suggested that I had insufficiently mixed the boil with the water I used to fill out the boil to the capacity of my carboy.
Does that sounds reasonable to you guys?

You have very little malt in your beer, with 35% of your fermentables coming from brown sugar I don't see how that recipe would ever get over 1.050. For an Imperial stout I can't see using less than 4 or 5 kilos of DME.

Corky, just want to check and see if you realize that he does 2.2 gallon batches instead of 5g batches?

Thanks, I missed that, but his extract/sugar ratio is way out of whack.
So back to his question, it's very likely the wort wasn't well mixed and his sample was not representative.

Oh completely agree on the ratio! I would fear a cidery taste with that much sugar.I noticed his batch sizes in another post of his about a barleywine so you didn't miss it buddy.
To original poster, how long did you blend your boil and top up water?

I honestly can't remember specifically mixing it up thoroughly until I had pitched the yeast.

Unless you totally screw up your water volumes it's very hard to miss OG on an extract recipe-basically you're adding pre measured amounts of sugar. With all grain there are lots of ways to screw up so OG can be all over the map.

Prague to Virginia. Can Kg to Lbs. be next? ;)

Something must be wrong with my monitor as I too, like Corky, missed the volume Velkyal was brewing.
Just curious, but what benefit would the last East Kent Golding addition have?
It would seem that 1/6 th of an ounce would lend very little aroma given a normal alpha range of 4.0% to 5.5%.

Sorry for causing confusion, you guys didn't really miss it, it wasn't in this thread lol. It was in another thread by this poster.

is the thread where he/she discuss the brew volume he/she uses. Sorry for being confusing on that lol

It was the last of the EKG I had, and won't be using it again for a few brews so I wanted to use it up rather than have it losing flavour.

OK, sounds good to me. I have a vision of Jacque Pepin (sp?) throwing a pinch of this, a dash of that, etc., into what he is cooking and viola, it comes out a masterpiece.

If it comes out a masterpiece I will be well chuffed! I tasted it green as I was bottling it and it is very nice, think Guinness with more chocolate and a more pronounced alcoholic glow!

Well it may not quite of been a masterpiece but it was very very good!
Everyone who has tried it has been blown away, I think I will be making more in the near future.
