My set up is tiny at the moment, due to a combination of moving from Prague to Charlottesville and while still looking for full time work, the restrictions of finance, so when I back a batch it is usually around 8.5 litres (2.2 US gallons I believe).

My brewing is extract with grains, and I want to do a barleywine which I will then age for a year in preparation of Thanksgiving 2010. Considering I do a 1 gallon steep and and boil, is it feasible to do a barleywine?

Sure, just find a 5gal recipe, divide all numbers by 5 then multiply by 2.2 and poof there ya go!

Example if the recipe calls for say 10 lbs Extra light Dry malt extract you would use roughly 4.4 lbs Extra light Dry malt extract 10 divided by 5 times 2.2=4.4

Thanks for that!

I am calling my barleywine "Samoset". Apparently that was the name of the first Native American to make contact with the Mayflower crowd, and his first sentence according to their written accounts, in perfect English, was "welcome, got any beer?".

I thought that the Mayflower came ashore because they ran out of Ale.

Puritans back then were so much more sensible than their modern version!

Puritans back then were so much more sensible than their modern version! Only about a third of the passengers on the Mayflower were Puritans. The rest were those seeking their fortunes in the Virginia Company's colony. Those other 2/3 were quite disappointed to be put ashore where they didn't want to be and be under the thumb of those who were intent on enforcing their views on all present. Still a relevant lesson.
