Just woundering if any of you grow your own hops. I have just bought my first home and the ol' lady wants a garden. So why not grow beer stuff. I live in Las Vegas, any advice would be great.

I just planted mine. First time though. Look at www.freshops.com and www.hopsdirect.com. I'm not sure where they are allowed to ship. Oregon could not ship to Washington, some type of quarantine. Lots of growing info on the freshops page. Good Luck, Bill

I found out a lot there. Let me know how it goes. We just ours in the ground last week. We don't plan on any more freezes, let's hope. I'm in Vancouver, Wa; the Willamette valley.

After visiting my local brew store, they informed me that only one person that they know of has been successful at growing there own HOPS. Do to the extreem heat here they tell me it take alot of time and pationts. So needless to say I abandoned the idea. Hope you have great success. Good luck.

Hops generally don't really take off until the second year; I have cascade and hallertau growing now ( I live in SE Wisconsin). A few years ago, when I lived in MN, I grew some williamette; the second year they covered the entire side of my house (I made a trellis of fishing line for them to grow on). They were on the south side, so they got a lot of sun. The soil there was practically pure sand, which has an acidic PH, they seem to like that.
They work well for flavoring and aroma, but I haven't used mine for bittering; I've read that the alpha content is greatly affected by soil, weather, and nutrients, so it be a bit of a gamble.
There is nothing like taking a ripe hop flower and crushing it between your fingers...the aroma is nearly orgasmic...or is that too much information???

:D

I planted my new rhizomes about a week and a half ago. The Hallertau have two shoots showing, tallest one is maybe 3". The Williamette has one shoot about 6" tall, and the Cascade has yet to break the surface...

Mine have been in the ground for probably 2 months. I have two Willamettes going, in the ground, they have reached about 5 ft. already. I put two Galenas in two half barrels, about 1 month ago. They have reached a foot so far. Growing like weeds now!

I HAVE BEEN GROWING HOPS GOING ON MY 4TH YEAR NOW. I CHECKED AROUND BEFORE I PLANTED THEM AND EVERYWHERE I READ SAID THEY NEED FULL SUN. WELL HERE IN WEST TEXAS OUR FULL SUN IS PRETTY DAMN FULL! A COUPLE OF FRIENDS OF MINE PLANTED THEIRS IN A PARTIAL SUN AREA AND HAD NO LUCK. I GOT SOME STONES AND I PLANTED MINE IN THE OPEN ARE THAT GETS FULL TEXAS HEAT. I GOT NEARLY 2LBS FROM ONE VINE LAST YEAR! I JUST WATER THE HOUND OUT OF THEM AND THEY GOT TO NEARLY 13FEET LAST YEAR. I DO THINK THE HEAT AFFECTS THE ALPHA AND THE AROMA. I DID NOT GET AS MUCH AROMA AS I MIGHT HAVE LIKED FROM MY CASCADE, BUT OVERALL IT WAS A PRETTY NEAT EXPERIENCE. I DRY HOPPED A RYE ALE WITH MY OWN HOPS AND IT WAS PRETTY GOOD.
