September hopping with beer events
by The Republican Entertainment Desk

It was unfortunate that there was no Connecticut River Brewer's Festival this year, as it has become a mainstay for local beer fans.

Despite that sad news, however, there will be plenty of smaller brew events on the calendar over the next few months. Here are a few September ones (listed chronologically) you might want to check out. (More events for October to come in another column in a few weeks):

First up is a plug for the 3rd Annual Westfield Rotary Club, which takes place tomorrow and Saturday at Barnes Airport in Westfield. The festival runs 5-10 p.m. Friday and noon-10 p.m. on Saturday. Music will once again be provided by The Krazy Fireman. Admission is $8.

Then, this Sunday, two beer events take place: The Brewmaster's Tavern in Williamsburg will present a five-course harvest dinner paired with Opa Opa beers. The dinner starts at 3 p.m. and the cost is $40. The Brewmaster's Tavern is also now offering three-course beer dinners at mid-week each week for $20. Call (413) 268-7741 for more information

Also on Sunday, The Sierra Grille in Northampton hosts a beer dinner featuring Peter Egelston, president and founder of Smuttynose Brewing Co. The dinner will feature the cuisine of New England paired with Smuttynose beers. Egelston, of course, is well known in these parts, as he founded the Northampton Brewery with his sister Janet, who now runs the local brewpub herself. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. and the cost is $55. Reservations are required.

Speaking of Janet, a dinner at The Northampton Brewery is next in line, coming on Sept. 16. The theme for the dinner is "From Farm to Table; From Grain to Glass" and will feature local produce paired with, well, local beers, of course. Chef Chris Ware will create a menu from local farms and farmers' markets and Head Brewer Donald Pacher will match these items with his concoctions. Look for his latest creation American Farmhouse Ale that night. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. and tickets are $40.

Last but definitely not least in September, The Student Prince in Springfield will host another Oktoberfest in the parking lot of the New England Farm Workers Council on Hampden Street. The festival will run from 5-10 p.m. om Sept. 18 and from 4-10 p.m. on Sept. 19. The fest will feature tons of great food and Spaten Oktoberfest beer, among other brews. Cost is $10 at gate, $9 in advance. The entry fee includes you first beer and commemorative stein. Call (413) 272-2200 for more information.
