I decided to finally try this thanks to a trade earlier this year from Brewmonkey. Boy, is this stuff thick. There is no way in hell I am going to be able to finish this in one sitting. Smelled like a mixture of soy sauce & molasses. So far I'm sceered. First sip was a huge blast of licorice and, well, licorice. Interesting...this might not be a bad brew. Later sips revealed stuff like raisins, dark fruit, chocolate and rum. Oh, and ALCOHOL!! Syrupy looking coating on the sides of the glass. This really is not a bad brew---one definitely has to be in the mood for something like this, but it is very different and, I think, enjoyable. I'm probably going to have to pour the rest of this back into the bottle and drink in a couple days. I want to finish it, but I can't----too much brew to consume 8 oz. of in one sitting.
Now I know what raisins and dark fruit taste like in a beer;)

Take a gooood look at the sides of the inside of the bottle. If I don't miss my guess, you can see where it's coated the inside as well! The bottle is blue, but you'll probably notice that it looks like the inside of the bottle is lined dark. It's really just the beer stuck to the inside of the bottle! Now THAT'S a stiff brew!

Thanks for the tasting notes. I have lots of it cellaring both 94 and 95. I am also a bit scared to open one as this was a huge beer when it was released. Hopefully it has mellowed.

I recommend having 3 or 4 people around to readily share a bottle with...I think I probably would have gotten sick if I drank the whole thing myself!! I'd say about 2 to 3 oz. is the most one can have at a sitting. I poured the rest back into the bottle, stuck the cork back in and put it in the fridge. I don't know if this was the right approach or not to saving it for a later time.

mine went down the sink....i think it was a 95' or a 98' maybe???
anyway your right about having to be in the mood for it, i wasn't. not sure what i was expecting....but i got soy sauce and well ....more soy sauce. mine went down the sink, was it a sin???i think not. maybe if i had been geard a little lower, and read the reviews and took my time , appearance , aroma and what not. i mean actually sat down with a pen and note pad to evaluate the little sucker i may have been able to appreciate it a lot more. i just opened the bottle , poured in to a glass took a drink and said W.T.F.!!!!

You know whats classic, I bought a case of that like 2 years ago. I have given some away to other beer lovers and had some myself. I still have like 9 of them in the cellar. That is certainly something to share with another person or two.

About 3 or 4 years back I was in love with the stuff and bought lots of it. Since then, I have about one a year. I have found that it is a great ingredient when making a flourless chocolate cake. Adds a whole new dimension to it. Plus, stir in a tablespoon or so to some whipped cream to top the cake....it's a great way to use up the beer if you're not inclined to drink it or want to get rid of it!
