Got a few quick questions that hopefully someone can shed light on. Is there an "easy" conversion to go from an all grain recipe to an extract?

Lets say the all grain recipe has the following grain bill:

8lb pale ale malt
1lb crystal malt
1lb roasted barley
1/2lb black patent malt
1/2lb chocolate malt
1/4lb wheat malt

To me, the pale ale malt is the grain that would need to be replaced with a pale extract. Trying to figure out how much.

Along the same lines, to do a half batch of a 5 gal recipe, is it just as simple as cutting all the ingredients in half?

Thankx for your time.

Here (http://hbd.org/recipator/) is a good recipe generator. Pale LME has the same ppg as pale malt so go and figure about 1# of LME per gallon. What kind of crystal malt does the bill call for, specificly looking for the Lovibond. The Crystal, Roasted Barley, Black Patent and Chocolate malt can all be steeped. You will lose a bit of efficiency through steeping so bump up the amounts a little. I'm sure someone can tell you how much as I do not know that, I am also a extract brewer. You can get wheat malt extract and it is pretty close to the ppg of wheat malt so that can be1# per gallon too. And yes cuting a recipe in half is just that easy.

My two cents isn't actually directed at your question, but I wanted to let you know that 16 oz chocolate and black patent grains is A LOT, actually way too much for my tastes. When you convert, I would suggest you use no more than 4 oz each of those, preferrably only 4 oz combined of dark grains.

I seem to remember making a barelywine back in '90 that was similar to this. It had about a pound total of black patent/chocolate malt (I hope I'm not mistaken). It turned out so good that I even tried to pour this on my pancakes!

grain pounds = extract pounds * extract yield / grain yield * mash efficiency

this yields:

1/extract pounds = extract yield / grain yield * mash efficiency * grain pounds

this yields:

extract pounds = grain yield * mash efficiency * grain pounds / extract efficiency

assuming british pale, a 65% efficiency, and light DME:

extract pounds = 38 * .65 * 8 / 45 = 4.4

i'd steep the rest and probably substitute .4 pounds of wheat extract.

sounds like a smaller beer, tho

Fretless- I thought you said that you just brewed your first batch of beer...the WorryWort Porter! What gives?
