In my journies around the brewing world I have noticed a peculiar phenomenon: Many homebrewers have facial hair. This thread is a poll of sorts. What do you have? Beard...stash...goat? I have a full beard that I shave off in the summer and grow out for the winter. This subject may not rival any of Fretless's questions, but we all need a light hearted look at life sometimes.

Personally, I think it's FAR better than any of my questions!
BTW, goatee for me... which, incindentally, is really called a Van Dyke.
My wife likes me clean shaven from time to time, so I appease her every so often.
had a goatee, now i'm growing a full beard.

I shave so as not to detract from a very full head of thick hair. I am oftrn told I have enough for two people. Not bad for a guy in his mid 40s.
well, i used to go buzz cut on top and a short goatee, but i told my fiance that i'm not shaving or getting a hair cut until we're married...so it's full beard and long hair time for me!

Goatee and fairly clean haircut. All those years with a high and tight has grown on me. Started growing the goatee one day and when it came in I liked it. Being the Irishmen that I am it is bright red and according to my son makes me look mean.
heh, that's funny brewmonkey. i've been buzz cut for years, made me look like a little boy, so i grew a goatee...went ok with my sub-1/8" hair.

I'm mostly German, but I've a little Irish in me so when I start growing my beard it comes in red and after it gets about 1/4" long it turns brown...strange eh?
Edit: Excessive ear hair counts as half a stash...:D

i look mostly like little cartoon icon thing to the left. sometimes a full goat, sometimes w/ mustache that doesn't quite connect to the chin, sometimes just scruffy cuz i'd rather not shave at all. occasionally, a full beard that has patches that just don't grow in all the way. i keep things interesting! ;)

I do the clipper haircut and shave the facial hair. Although I only shave about twice a week, so at times the facial hair is as long as the rest of it.

Wife doesn't like me w/ facial hair so I'm mostly cleanshaven ... although I really hate (ie too lazy) to shave.

Forgot to mention long wavy dark brown hair. My mom won't let me cut it... :D

I go for beard and short hair in winter. Clip everything with clippers. I shave head and keep goatee in summer. I will shave my head again next time we have a 90 degree day here in spring time. Mine is mostly due to low maintenence because I am lazy.

I've got long hair and a goatee. I prefer facial hair due to laziness. Shaving is somewhat of a hassle.

Hair is fairly short, though I just went tight(er) with a #3 blade. Shaped goatee - takes me almost 20 friggin' minutes to get it just right! I hate shaving, too.
I grew a beard for Halloween as I went to several parties as "Chef" from South Park. My usual dark hair grew in with notable light brown, reddish, and many white hairs! May be time for some "Just for Men" gel. :p
Cheers!

Clean face and I keep the hair at 1/4 inch or less. I spent my time from 18 - 25 years old with hair down on my shoulders. I like the no fuss of short hair. I don't have a beard because it doesn't grow very well.

I couldn't vote twice, so I just voted the way I am half of the time, which is smooth faced. When I do grow facial hair it usually just a fu-manchu thing on my chin. Of course I have long head hair though. It comes down to the middle of my chest.

Goatee in the Summer, beard in the winter. As Brewmonkey's, mine belies my Irish heritage - and, as Chaz', it also reveals my age in flecked manner! :/

i couldn't agree more...i prefer my hair to be under 1/8" and my goatee short...but i've gone on record as saying i won't cut my beard nor my hair (except to trim the split ends) until my fiancee and i are married...my one act of civil disobedience...and if you believe that, i've got some bridges to sell (about the civil disobedience thing) ;)

Cleanshaven. It's a lot easier to shave everything on your face rather than trying shave & trim around every little thing. Shaving is a pain in the ass anyways, it cut's into my beer drinking time. So why would I waste time trimming & fiddling with every hair on my face?
I am happy to say that at age 46, I still have all the hair that belongs on my scalp & it hasn't turned grey, yet.

I have a full beard, it is winter in Iowa. It is actually a pretty big beard at that. I keep my hair pretty short though.

shaved off my mustache the day i turned 30. eight years since then, never let it grow back. the wife even thinks it looks ok, finally... I don't even like going more than a day without shaving, starts to drive me nuts as it grows out... I even shave when i spend a week in the boudary waters....

I am the drastically different one of the bunch, I guess. The hair on my head is non-existent. I shave my head completely smooth. (My wife likes to come up and rub it, then say something "witty" like, "magic 8 ball, will I have a date for the prom?") I have a soul patch that leads into a small patch of hair on my chin. No mustache.

I'm smooth all the time. I can't stand facial hair for two reasons: 1) It itches the hell out of me
2) I apologize in advance for this, but I've always thought goatees looked ridiculous - like a facial vagina...

You can see for yourselves.
I'd like to know, though - what are the preferences of our lady members. Not in what they wear, of course, but in what they prefer - in both a visual and tactile sense.

I'm one of the two on here with the mutton/elvis burns. They are almost to my mouth. Had side burns since I could grow them at around 15 and they kept getting longer and longer as the 12 years have past. I must say though, I do groom them most of the time so they are not shaggy. Let them get wild from time to time just for fun.

Used to have a beard many moons ago until one summer day. I was changing oil in my old Shuvette. The drain plug was being a real pain in the arse. After one final shove, the plug finally broke loose draining oil all over my face & beard. Tried everything to get the oil out my beard, but it still smelled like used 10w-30. The scissors & razor came out the next day & I have been clean-shaven since.

Good guestion, Richard!! I prefer a "I shaved 5 days a go"-look, and the friction too :o
And man with a good full beard always gets my attention!
Hair (on one's scalp...) in the other hand can be whatever suits the man best!!

PS - To answer the question posed by Richard English: Absolutely LOVE the beards!

Just a stache for me. I've had it about 18 years now. I've threatened to shave periodically and have gotten pleas not to from my female friends. I'll not shave if the girlfriend goes out of town for a few days or over a camping trip. The girlfriend actually encourages the non-shaving during camping, so me thinks she kinda likes the "manly" look of scruffyness sometimes.

I went to a high school in th 70's with a very strict hair code. As soon as I got out I let my hair grow and have ever since. I'll have brief 1 or 2 year stretches with shorter hair but I've decided I'll die with my pony tail, either this year or in 50 years. I used to have to shave to work on oil/gas wells with H2S but I quit shaving permanently about 8 years ago and I'll never shave again. I really hated to shave for a one day job.

An amusing story about my hair. The last time I cut my ponytail off was 1998. The only person who noticed was my daughter because she came home from school and there was a short haired man in the living room reading the mail(I had my back to her). At dinner my wife asked if I had trimmed my beard or 'stash but she refused to notice my lack of hair. My parents had complained for years about my long hair and when we visited them I had to show them it was gone, they simply couldn't see that I had cut it.

I have fairly strict grooming standards at work, so no long hair or beard for me..until I retire.
I used to have the prerequistive law enforcement type mustache, but it made me look like a cheesy porn star, so I shaved it off.
I have let my hair grow out again after a few years of shaving it, and once for a VERY good cause. Who knows, maybe I'll shave it again this year.

What an odd thread. And odd it got resurrected.
My wife buzzes my scalp with a 3/8 inch blade every 6 weeks or so. I had a job ten years ago where there was no grooming policy, but I had grown a beard and boss didn't like it--though he had one, go figure. He suggested I would be taken more seriously if I paid more attention to grooming. Taking that as a challenge, I didn't cut my hair or shave for months. I finally got bored with the upkeep about Thanksgiving and shaved and had my hair cut. My wife still cringes at the "pre-cut" pictures. I'll spare those of you here (never learned how to scan pics in, anyway).
My mustache has always grown in white, so I've always looked like an Amish farmer when I sport a beard--until you get up close. My wife has always wished I could sprout a Sam Elliot-style bottle brush mustache. She's a sucker for those Western types;) .
So for the forseeable future, I'm clean-shaven and "high and tight."

We had what was called the "Decorum Committee", basically a group of suck-asses who inspected the males' hair every Monday. If your hair touched your ears or was less than 1 inch from your collar you were given until Wednesday to cut it. On wednesday if it still was too long you got suspended until Monday. Needless to say I got reported every Monday, and barely passed every Wednesday but I never got suspended. When I went back for our 20th reunion I had to show ID to get in-they all still had short hair and I had a ponytail.

I keep my hair short for ease. I always hated having to put "product" in it and have never really done so. When I get out of the shower my hair is dry. In the 70s I had long blond hair. but I cut it off about 74. I had a mustace - Wilfred Brimley / Teddy Roosevelt type for about 13 years from college time but have been clean shaven for many, many years. I hate shaving but do it every day except weekends and vacations usually. I believe in low maintenence.

I'd first let my beard grow in when I was shaving in a common dorm bathroom and someone ran headlong through the place, bumped my arm and the blade opened up a four-inch long slice on my neck. The beard became permanent in '90 when an overhead crane in a steel mill knocked me off a 20-foot high pile of steel blooms (20" X 15" X 17', ~9 tons each), and I fell between two piles and broke my fall against the blooms several times on the way down with my face. The rips and gashes did not close well, so it was impossible to shave with a blade, and the scab and scar tissue plugged up the electric shaver, So I just shave enough on my cheeks and neck to avoid the Grizzly Adams look.

I grew a beard primarily because it was the best way to keep my face warm in the winter. I used to race bicycles and I'd be out on a nice brisk 20 F winter day, so it was a definite plus. My secondary reason goes with Chaz - low maintainence. I trim it evey week or so. None of the daily shaving for me.

Used to have hair down to about the middle of me back. About 6 years ago I got a hair up my ass and cueballed my head.... about 1 year ago I realized I was going bald like the other males in my family so I decided for one last blow out and have grown my hair back out to about mid shoulderblade length and will keep it as long as I can :)
Facial hair.... I play around alot with that; goatees, clean, full beards, pretty much all of them though usualy I keep the shaved a couple days ago look going(even though I shave most every day) My facial hair grows amazingly fast.

The hair on top is relatively short now for me, though it does only get cut every 2 months or so when it starts to fall into my eyes and bug me. Use to have a big ol natrual fro looking thing. When wet is was down to the middle of my back, dry it barly went past my shoulders. I have a goatee now since I can not really grow any facial hair on my cheeks and when I do it looks like dirt.

Mill Rat's post reminds me of a funny story... A guy I know kept a beard for a long time after a chainsaw kicked back into his chin one day. Guess he's luck to still be around to worry about the scar.
