View Full Version : Filtering by gravity

I was amazed today when I was able to filter through a 1 micron filter by gravity alone at table height. Previously, I always pushed beer from keg to keg through a filter with CO2. I even made a little hand held CO2 rig to apply pressure through the airlock stopper of the fermenter, but was stunned when it drained right down to the racking port with no assistance. Here's some pics of the setup (please excuse the mess, I was trying to organize all my beer gear boxes while doing this).

Did this method take much longer than using CO2??

Thank you

It was actually faster than when I push it between kegs with CO2. But then I do push filtering quite slow at only 3 PSI so as not to stir up the sediment in the source keg. Obviously, that is not such a concern when filtering out of a conical. I wish I had actually timed the process of gravity feeding from the conical. I know it didn't take 10 minutes to drain 5 gallons.
