Is there any local beer there at all ? If so, which ones should I be looking out for ?

Hmm, there were a couple at the local Greek restaurant we like to frequent (Chicago has a big Greek neighborhood with many great restaurants), recommended by the waiter -- they were decent Pilsner-styles, but not much more.
IIRC Mythos was one, Athenian may have been the other. I'd go for the Greek wine if I were going, not exactly a beer-drinking country.

Well, I'll certainly visit these guys here since their brewery is in the same region the wife and I are staying in:

Hillas is another Greek lager, nothing too exciting, but about a quarter-notch above Mythos.

I'm gonna be in London for a week or so in March. I've already made plans to meet up with Richard. Otherwise I might have considered Greece. :)

I've been to Greece about a dozen times over the past 20 or so years. It used to be all Amstel all the time - although brewed under license in greece. Now there are a few local brands, all pretty low grade pilsners. Alpha, Mythos, Hellas etc.
Mythos is my favourite these days. But you will probably find the wine and ouzo more enjoyable.

I've got a connection with a pub owner in Birmingham offering to show me around:
Hey Chuck,
You could make the journey a day out from a London base. Birmingham is 90 minutes from London Euston Station - just a couple of stops from Paddington on the tube. The train is direct. Leave London after the rush hour, say about 10am and we would pick you up at the station. We spend the afternoon in the Black Country and drop you back at the station. You will be back in London in time for last orders!
Research Bathams, Sarah Hughes and Ma Pardoes Old Swan. These are iconic British brewersand well worth a pilgrimage. Its no trouble for us ... any excuse to go drink great beer.
Regards Keith
I'll likely take him up on his offer.
