Or, as the little old lady who directed us to the Keller in Munich said, "Aaah - SalVATor Keller." The Germans know good beer.

Clear, deep copper color with an off-white to light tan head that settles a little quicker than I'd like, but revives well.

Nose of toasty, bread crust melanoidin maltiness to vague caramel to vague DMS and then spicy alcohol.

Sweet, bready malt flavor then spicy alcohol. Toasted bread back with a slightly sweet then quickly dry finish. Something rather fruity lingering in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is somewhat syrupy, very smooth. Body is medium to medium heavy.

Drinkability is very good, but you can tell that more than one of this will start to weigh on you.

Damn good brew -- and I just remembered how much I enjoy Schneider Aventinus -- be fun to try the 2 side-by-side.

I've only had .5L or 12oz. containers. I would
like to find this one on tap some time.

My prefered Doppelbock even though I know it has gone through some changes recently. As far as the drinkability goes, it has given me one of the worst hangovers of my life as I did not realize the potency of 9%, as I proceded to drink 6+ beers of this stuff as if it was a session beer.

Not sure I see the comparison to Aventinus, a weizenbock(ale) to a doppelbock(lager). A strong beer for sure but totally different characteristics and hard to compare.

The beer it is most often compared to, Celebrator, is one of the worst beers I have ever had. No matter how many times I have tried Celebrator, and it has been many, I have come away with soy flavored oil. Very cloying and sweet. A beer I will never drink again.

You sure on that? BA gives it 7.9, RealBeer 7.4, but I'll agree with you on the hangover -- I forgot that one of these can give me a foggy head in the morning. Funny thing is, I drank a few in Munich and never had a problem. Makes me think that it has something to do with Pasteurization.

Aventinus is a Weizendoppelbock. The Comparison being some similar toasty and fruity characters along with alcohol character -- but also because I always forget how much I like it, and that's what struck me about the Salvator.

And don't forget, you can compare by contrast in science. ;)

History: Aventinus, the world’s oldest top-fermented wheat doppelbock, was created in 1907 at the Weisse Brauhaus in Munich using the ‘Méthode Champenoise’ with fresh yeast sediment on the bottom. It was Schneider’s creative response to bottom-fermenting doppelbocks that developed a strong following during these times.

The beer it is most often compared to, Celebrator, is one of the worst beers I have ever had.

LOL! Sounds like we may never agree on anything as I like Celebrator quite a bit. Based on your experience, I'd say you may have gotten some old bottles -- I've never found any soy character in a Celebrator -- Sam Adams Triplebock is another story!

I've only seen it on tap at a couple places around here, wouldn't doubt it could be found in Milwaukee -- 'nother road trip?

Usually I fall heavily on the side of the German originals in these discussions but my favorite Doppelbock at the moment is Troeggenator.

Couldn't call it a fav as I've only
had it once, but sure was DELISH!

Come to think of it, Don't know of
a Doppel that I didn't like.

Bottle reads 7.9, by the way (I know, I know -- 1% makes a huge difference after a half liter).

Last time I had it was 5-6 years ago with the hangover and I believe it was stronger then, I could be wrong about that also.

Yes I often laugh about Celebrator myself as I realize I am in the minority. I have tried it on a number of occasions from different stores and as the first beer and last beer and always came away with the same impression. Gross.

And looking back on your original post I understand the whole Aventinus line alot better with a clear head.

Amen, Brother! I'm a doppelbock fanatic. Luv 'em. My closest match to Salvator is another German original which is Spaten Optimator. Both very fine beers.

Does Troegs make a bad beer?

Just had the Aventinus Eisbock and the Celebrator Doppelbock the other night at BJCP class. No soy at all. Both were outstanding.
