after a couple of winter/festive ales the other night I wanted something a little lighter, and had a pint of this old warhorse.

This was probably one of the first "good" beers I ever had, way back in the '70s...you know, I was afraid it would be terrible after all the real ales and micros and cask conditioned bitters of the past four or five years...but it wasn't a bad pint, to tell the truth. Not great either but for something mass produced as it is, and owned by Coors/unibrew...well, you could make do with it in a pinch.

IMO, Bass nowadays is sadly bland - all that remains are hints of what I remember it tasting like. Maybe all of the super hopped brews have dulled it's taste to me but I doubt it. It seems that I remember Bass tasting more like Young's Ram Rod (a hoppier, maltier, caramelly brew) once upon a time - now a pale glimmer of what it was...

On tap it seems to have more of the malt and caramel taste than the bottled but still not what it was..........

Still I agree - something to fall back to when the other options are less than acceptable.

B3s and I were just talking about this very thing last night in IRC. He suggested and I have to agree that if that is all there is then its time to have a whisky. :)

I don't know...I still find Bass to be a more than adequate beer. When I first tried it some 20 years or so ago, I remember it as tasting much like it does now on the rare occaisions when I do drink it.

It is widely available in restraunts around here. So I occasionally have it with dinner if there are no micros on tap. Also many of the casinos have it in Las Vegas. Better than drinking Heineken or BMC.

I would put Bass Ale into the catagory of beers I like. I would definetly drink it over most of the other beers available at restaurants.
