its like a yahoo messenger type thing, but designed to handle large groups. you should go to that link and install mirc I can help you with any questions you may have. Currently B3s and Toneyc hang out there regularly would be good to get more people in there could be a lot of fun.

anyone of those links will work, they are all just diferent locations for the same thing
I am not sure what registering with sorcery.net does other than give you a user name. try one of the other links to download the application. once you are installed it leads you through a bit of junk like whats your username ect for the the server type "irc.sorcery.net" then once you hit connect type "/join #beer" at the prompt

Sorry.... the version of IRC I'm using is old, and doesn't have multi-server support. Multi-server allows you to join multiple online communities, as described below. But here's the deal, for everyone who's confused:
IRC [Internet Relay Chat] is like a series of online communities, comprised (principally) of servers, with chat rooms. mIRC is a client program (much like IE or Netscape are client browser programs which allow you to view web pages) which enables you to join the online community servers, and rooms. The link to plain old mIRC is this (http://www.mirc.co.uk/). This site has many useful links that go into mIRC in detail. For the true beginner, you can use commands like /list to show all the rooms on a server, /join *room name* to join a room, /part to leave a room, and /quit to disconnect from a server.
There are other client programs as well; many just build upon mIRC but offer other functions, like allowing you to automatically share files (file servers) with others. Some that offer these features are:
Polaris (http://polaris-central.com/)
Invision (http://invision.lebyte.com/)
Procreation (http://www.procreationscript.tk/)
So, sorcery.net is the online community tweek is in. And #beer is the chat room he is in.
Oh, and I'll be there tomorrow, tweek. Just have to update mIRC first ;)
well, i'm probably the last person on the board to talk about irc as i compile my own client from ircd and have been using text based clients for so long that the term neandrathal might come to mind (however, don't get me started on how AOL ruined my internet).
mirc is a decent IRC client and can handle multiple sources. Mac users might want to check out bitchx (OSX only).

well im lost in the sauce here, irc, pkg,eku 28 it's all the same to me. besides im at work and share this comp with my boss, might not be a good idea to install anything thats not *work* related.

I'm scared to install anything on my computer anymore... everything I try to do to it just ends up slowing it down, and then my wife has to rescue me. We've wiped this thing about 5 times since I bought it due to my screw ups...

I hear ya fretless. I am funny about installing stuff on my comp too. If I dont know it it doesnt go on. For waht its worth mirc wont bog ya down any. I leave mine running 24/7 with no issues.

Because I am a dunce I need to ask, Is this like an Instant Messenger type of thing? Like an IM chat room? I use IM all the time and always have it up. My IM handle is: Our Man Chuck.
well, IRC is sort of like IM -- it has more similarities with chat rooms. without getting too technical: IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is the precursor to most IM protocols, but built on original Internet premises of loose network distribution (although the irc.sorcery.net server Tweek set us up on doesn't have the typical annoyance of netsplits and also has nickserv and chanserv bots so that handles and operators aren't lost).
been using IRC for 15 years and prefer it over IM (although I do the IM thing, too).
download an IRC client (mIRC being the most popular on that "operating system" from Redmond), choose a nick, connect to server irc.sorcery.net, and join channel #beer.

Do we all have to be on sorcery.net to talk to each other, or can we be on our own? I'm not even sure what server I'm on... something out of Illinois...
If you see fretlessman71 on the board, that's me, of course... say Hi!
i don't believe irc.sorcery.net shares it's channels on any of the other nets like dal, ef, or under.

Beaver I didnt see you enter the room. You probabally were in the wrong room or you just hadnt joined the room yet. Once you are connected you need to type "/join #beer" at the prompt at the bottom of the app to join the room.

I am usually always in there, even if I am not at my computer I am still idling in there, so I can usually see messages of people that have come and gone. I didnt see any join or leave messages.
