I TRIED this... I even went and got Guinness Extra Stout in the bottle, and I think I can see how they complement each other, but I'm not quite sure. I guess I'm still thinking about how I'm used to dunking oreos in milk, and I can't quite find that flavor. Maybe you're just weird....? If so, welcome to the club - I put turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce on stale white bread for post-Turkey day sandwiches!....

....which is what I had with my Harpoon Winter Warmer tonight. Deee-lish!

Oh yeah!

Fret, it's just that age-old story of your tastebuds not being developed yet! ;)

Although I do not usually eat them with beer, I can state that without exception, Grandma Utz are the best potato chips in the world. Maybe because they are cooked in lard. Lately I have been eating (addicted to) home made chex mix with my beer.

Sterzing's potato chips. Cooked in lard and extra salty, they are the best. You will only find them in a limited area of the midwest thought. If you are ever driving through Iowa, I highly recommend Sterzing's.

On Brew Day when friends come over we serve Salami and Colby Cheese, sliced thick with saltine crackers. Plus a keg of Homebrew.:D

My chips can beat up your chips! Sterzings sound good. are they thicker than regular chips? The Grandma Utz are east coast . Maybe we should arrange a potato chip swap.

Not really a thicker chip. But you would swear you are eating french fries when you taste the first bite. Here is a link where you can order and read a brief history of the chips. My dad buys them several bags at a time and shares them with his old mutt of a dog. He is pretty protective of his Sterzing's stash.

i'll also occasionally make a batch of my super-secret wings recipe...ok, it's not that secret, pretty simple, really...but damn good. and, as someone else mentioned above...sausage and cheese! mmmm, sausage, beer, and cheese...a WI smorgasbord :D

You guys remember Charles Chips? They're available again (at least in my area), and they actually taste like potatoes - as opposed to most of the national brands.

But, my favorite beer snack is still pretzels.

Thanks! I ordered a 4-pack. I guess Im as much of a potato chip snob as I am a beer snob. Here is the Utz site:

http://www.utzsnacks.com/bgUTZProd_GranPotato.shtml

Only the Grandma Utz are the best. The rest of their stuff is decent but not great.

Maybe I'll try it with a SN Porter instead of a Guinness XS... something not so bitter might complement it better, eh what?

OH, OH, I GOT IT! YOUNG'S DOUBLE CHOC. STOUT! Whaddya think? And are the cans preferable to the bottles, or is it the other way around?

If I am eating while I am drinking then it would be dinner. (Sometimes lunch.) Otherwise, why let something get in the way of a really good brew?

hops99, I remember Charles' Chips back in the day when they delivered them to your house in a truck that looked just like the can that the chips used to come in. Those were the days...
However, around here we can also get Zapp's chips, which I think I might prefer to Charles' Chips.

sounds like a winner to me, i think the dcs in the bottle does not have the widget, and my experiences with the bottles were just okay. the can for some reason (probably the widget) seemed a little better. hey maybe we can get someone to do a side by side comparison and give us a report on it .....fret?

i kinda like the tabasco cheez-its when I am having lighter ales. Typically I dont like to mix my solids with ym liquids, unless I am drinking wine, but those cheezits can be good sometimes.

oooowe! i had a tabasco beer once at the riverside brewing co.

haha yeah I could see that. Though I must admit I have always been curious as to how those beers with the chili peppers in them taste. I have yet to find the time and or lack of judgement to try one.

well thats not rue either, I have ahd the lack of judgement on several occasions, just didnt have one on hand :)

yeeah i've never had the courage to try any of those chili beers either, the tabasco was on tap and a free sample thing thats why i tried it, im not entirely sure im glad i did, other then it gives me something to talk about.
afa buttered popcorn, a lot of brew pubs usually have it there and it is pretty good.

Ready, willing, and able, sir! Just as soon as I can justify the purchase of EVEN MORE BEER to my lovely wife... she doesn't seem to think that a case of beer just isn't enough, you know? (And she's probably right... they always seem to be, too...)

hopjack13
12-03-2003, 12:25 AM
can't you just explain to her that beer is important?
and that it's better to have and not need, then to need and not have? maybe if you dicuss it with her over a pint or seven she'll change her mind....always works for me ;)

I had the Oreos with more Guinness XS tonight... and the XS was warmer; a much more appropriate drinking temp. And the combination was NOT BAD! There's definitely something to this... but I'm going to try a SN Porter, a DCS, and a Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout over the next few months with a few Oreos toward the end of the tasting just to make sure that I don't contaminate my taste bud brain. You can cleanse the palate, but it's harder to change your expectation for flavor when it comes to sugar, you know?

On another note: My Worry Wort Porter might just end up being a very light beer, alcohol wise. Suits me fine; if I like it, I can have several without feeling like I have to wait a few hours before I can drive. I've always said that if I could make non-alcoholic beer taste this good, I'd never drink anything again....

B3S, would you mind sharing that habenero wheat recipe? My habenero plants didn't do very well this year, but I expect them to do better come springtime. A habenero wheat sounds like a great springtime beer!

Not to take any experimentation away from Fret -- multiple reviews are always good, but I've tried the cannned and bottled DCS side-by. I prefer the bottle because I feel it's smoother and has more full flavor. The nitro in the widget-can seems to add too much fizz and air to the beer, and even a little bite. Again, JMO - and I wouldn't turn down either. I'll add that from the keg is best of all.

AFA the Oreos with the DBL Choc, it's almost as though the 2 sweetnesses (is that a word?) cancel each other out. The bitter roastiness of Guinness X compliments the chocolate (and cream filling) sweetness of the Oreos - and vice versa.

Oh yeah, Oatmeal cookies with oatmeal stouts are great too Hopjack!

These have become a favorite (and pricey) snack lately - and yes, they go great with smoked beers! They're good with any darker, full-bodied beers, but a nice Rauchbock in the glass and a new tin of smoked almonds -- mmmm!

Ummm. Smoked almonds and rauch.

I have had a couple chili beers and found them to be quite good. I do not recomend Cave Creek Chili beer though. I believe it comes out of Arizona and is a gimmick to promote a restraunt. They actually have a chili pepper in the clear glass bottle.

I usually like a chicken sandwich and some chips while I'm surfin' and enjoyin' a brew.

My wife doesn't care for the combo though:
Ruffles Sour Cream and Cheddar chips and beer -- and I'm tootin' in bed all night long :D

What our wives deal with .... mine is an angel for sure!

I recieved my order or 4 bags of the Sterzings Chips. (I ordered from the website.) I sampled some this morning. They are are indeed excellent. BUT, still not quite as good as the Grandma Utz. Thanks for the recommendation of the Sterzings Brownbeard. If you will PM me with your address I will see that you get some Grandma Utz to sample.
