Dos Equis XX Ambar is about as good as it gets.

My wife spent a week down there last year and even though she's no beer snob she was very disturbed at the lack of choice and quality. But she says there was quantity.

Don't know where in Mexico you're going to be (if you are, indeed, going to be in Mexico) but this is a fascinating article nonetheless:

You're much closer to Mexico than I am so some of those beers I can't get even here. My 2 favorites on your list would be the Negro Modelo and the Dos Equis Amber. If I can't find one of those at a Mexican restaurant it's time for a delicious ice cold glass of tea.
And thanks EddieGlick for that article. That was interesting.
I do know a pro-brewer who is in the process of starting a brewpub on the Pacific coast of Baja(an undisclosed location) but it will be a year or 2 before it's up and running.

I had heard that there was a craft brewing movement afoot in Mexico, anyone have any info on that?
edit: OK, after reading the article, I'm meaning craft brewing in terms of the early 90's in the US...not just a couple of brew pubs

I like Negra Modelo quite a bit. Dos Equis amber runs second.

You got me on that one. I had one at a fish fry last weekend.

Diane's husband is building a brewpub somewhere in Baja, it's supposed to open sometime this fall.

Modelo makes a couple brews that don't get to the states, Victoria and Leon. Leon is a nice dark lager with roasty notes. Victoria is also darkish, but pretty bland

Last time I had Modelo Especiale I was pretty underwhelmed.
I'm with Corky - Dos Equis Amber or Negra or it's iced Tea for me too.
If I was going to try to clone Negra, I'd probably approach it with base of 6 row, some flaked maize or polenta, some munich, and probably a small touch of Carafa special II for color. [edit] probably a touch of caramunich as well, but really restrained.
This might be a neat community brew if it wasn't a lager.

Tres Equis (Three XXX) is a good workaday beer that I drank in Tamulipas. I have never seen it in the US. It had a sweet malty lingering aftertaste if I recall correctly.
