I was racking my honey ale to secondary today and after I tasted the sample I pulled I found it lacking somthing. Well to make a long story short I quickly boiled some water and steeped a couple of cloves in it and added this to the secondary. The amount of hot water I added was a couple tablespoons so I did not worry about that. My question is: Will the cloves add anything to the finished product as I have them or should I have added the cloves to the boil?

Edit: This is a 2+ gallon batch.

Making a "tea" out of spices is fine and will add something to the beer. It is my preferred method as I can add a little at a time until I have found the flavor I am looking for. By adding to the boil you are stuck with it if you add to much.
