how much should a pound of candy sugar in five gallons of wort increase the OG?
I added this and didn't like the results

According to the recipator Belgian Candi Sugar has a 46 pppg.

That would be an OG of 1.046 with 1LB/1USG.
So in a 5 USG batch he should expect about .009 for 1lb/5USG.

thanks toneyc for asking the question !!!!
and that jump is alot higher than I got from adding the candy sugar.
My OG went from a 1.049 to 1.052
could my hydrometer be unreliable?

If you added 1 LB to a 5 gal batch you should have gone from a 1.049 to right aroung a 1.058 figuring 46PPG.

pppg = per pound per gallon or something like that.
evilredlight: maybe you didn't get the sugar complete dissolved or mixed in the wort. I once got an erronous density reading because my wort wasn't thoroughly mixed.
also, since temperature affects gravity, then it might be possible that you got a little rounding error in the temperature adjustment.

temperature it could be, I only have this cheap sticker digital thermometer that gives a range of temps that i am inside of
I am pretty sure i dissolved the sugar and mixed it into the wort

When I made a Belgian Dubbel, it came with a pound of candi sugar.
Even with the water at 150F+, it still took 10 or 15 minutes to dissolve in the kettle. I was really surprised...
There's a good chance that you either didn't get it dossolved, or didn't get it mixed completely. You should have seen a much higher jump in your OG.

it is also not fermenting
I don't know if it is lagtime because of the low temp
or if the yeast is dead ( i doubt)
I used wyeast belgian abbey but the package never expanded
I even wrapped it in a towel and sat it on top of a water bottle
I'm scared and out of homebrew $$'s

Hey EvilRed
Are you brewing 5 US gal or 5 Imperial gal?
Most Canucks brew 23 liter batches, which is around 6 US gal. That would explain part of the missing OG. Or maybe your candy just had a lower PPG.

would it explain it because i do brew 23 litres
i just figured that was five gallons
well colour me red... and white.
thanks

It is 5 gallons, they are just imperial gallons which are larger than U.S. gallons. We Canajuns need to watch ourselves when talking about recipies and the like on this board or we can cause all sorts of misunderstandings. Also we use alcohol by volume more and they use alcohol by weight.

so does alcohol byvolume and byweight
does that change the og readings on the hydrometer?

Your hydrometer should say which scale it reads in.
Mine says "By Volume" right on it.
I've never seen a "By Weight" one, so I don't know if they exist.

The software utility ProMash will enable you to calculate both ABW and ABV, from just the OG and FG. So if you post those here, I can tell you both.
