My LHBS in Delaware told me that the ONLY carboy manufacturer in the America's (Mexico) is no longer making them. Now you can only get them from Italy apparently. A cursory look on the internets has confirmed this to be true. :(

I switched over to buckets earlier this year anyway. Too many horror stories about broken carboys for my taste.

I use buckets for my primaries, but xfer to glass for secondary. I haven't had one break yet *knocking on wood* and I like to see how it is clarifying. Perhaps it is time for better bottles.

There is a store around me that sells the 5 gallon glass carboys for $10 a piece. I think it is $10, but might be less. It is a pottery store. I think I will go stock up. I hate the bottling bucket because I can't see what is going on. Sometimes, I like to just sit and watch the natural process at work.

Yeah my LHBS guy told me this about a month ago so I bought a couple for secondary and future lagering. He told me that the italian ones were going to be far more expensive so if you prefer glass do the same...I'm going to buy a couple of buckets with spigots in the near future...just easier for the simple two week ale fermentations to keg deal.

I have actually modified the top of one of my corny kegs with an airlock for fermenting purposes. That way i can toss it into my beer fridge, adjust with temp controller to lager with my consumables.

Stopped by my LHBS on my lunch today - the owner was aware of it, and said his prices were going to be going up. He gets $25 for a 5 gallon carboy at the moment, he said he's probably going to up the price 8-10 or so...

How about the plastic carboys used in water coolers? Why not use those? I just use buckets, but it seems like the plastic ones would be cheap and provide good visibility.

There is a company called "Better Bottle" which basically uses colorless versions of those and sells them specifically for homebrewing. you can even get them with a spigot attached.

Glad I have 4.

Also consider using the Better Bottles. They work quite well and don't break.
