Same recipe as last year? What did you submit? How were your scores?

Too bad, Mad. But thanks for posting this. I hadn't seen it yet, and I am the winner in the Smoke/Wood category for the NE! YEAH!

Sounds like fun...might enter next year.
I noticed under "Rules and Regulations" it states :
Should your homebrew be selected as the Grand Champion, you and your Co-Brewer must assign any and all patent and intellectual property rights in your brew to The Boston Beer Company if requested
Dunno about that one....

IIRC correctly, your "price" in that case is $5000. Is your recipe worth that much?

I'd have to think about it...
You'd figure if your recipe won Grand Champ among thousands of entries...you've definitly got something. Any seeing all the money that Sam Adams stands to make off YOUR recipe...I dunno. I think I'd take the title and walk home happy...with my recipe tucked tightly in my pocket. But that's me.

Quite honestly, you won't get any $ for a recipe in the brewing industry except through a competition like this. I know of NO professional brewers who have ever been able to sell a recipe, and I know many of the big names in the industry.

Yea, I pretty much figured that...
For me, it wouldn't about money...I'd like to keep the recipe, brew it for friends and people to enjoy and pass it on down the line to my kids...so on and so on.

I would be surprised if Boston Beer makes much money off the longshot competition. It's got to be expensive to make and package beers that have never been brewed before at a one time shot and then distribute them. I have purchased the long shot packs before and they don't sell for much of a premium IIRC.
Nothing says you can't tweak the recipe a little bit and then still brew it. Maybe you could use 1/2 ounce less grain next time.
BTW, congrats to Beerking for placing in the competition.

Thanks, Jeff.
I also don't think that them having sole "intellectual rights" to the recipe means you can never brew it again. But then again, I am no lawyer.
Besides, how would they know? ;)

All they care about is you selling the recipe, I'd assume. Like if you made your own brewery and tried to sell it and advertised it was a Longshot winner, they could come after you.
You can still make it at home. Hell, tell people you won and keep making it. Again, Sam Adams couldn't give a damn unless you're keeping them from making money.
And congrats 'King! I may enter my Wit next year.

Thanks Claudius, I sure thought I had a winner.
Beerking, I sent it a brown ale, the same porter from last year, and an IIPA that used a pound of hops.
And for what it is worth, I'd give them the recipe, since most of our recipes are probably not economically feasible to brew....
edit: Yikes, I gotta watch my typing... I hadn't even made it to the tap when I typed that...

I agree with the expense of the recipes. Nice to be a homebrewer and not really have to worry about the cost.
Then again, I am about to be a commercial brewer as well, and I guess I have to start worrying about the cost a little.
FWIW, I only sent in the one beer, a rauch heller bock, which also took 2nd in the BOS round at the Brewers East End Revival (Long Island) competition.

There is a pub in town being renovated to become a brewpub. A friend has bought a 3BBL DME system and asked me to brew for him. My son and I will be the brewers there. We expect to be brewing no later than October. Needless to say, the owner is very pleased to see his brewer winning awards.

Thanks. I figure it is a chance to get my feet wet in the pro realm before I open my own brewery someday.

The agreement means Sam Adams won't have any issues distributing your beer, which is what they get out of the deal.
Congrats BeerKing - on both the win and the job.

Build a fully automated system, from grain weighing to boiling to keep the labor cost down.
Good luck!

Very nice to hear, Beerking - and well done on the 2nd place BOS as well. I had a beer that scored a 35 there and didn't even place... but it's good to know good people are winning the big stuff there. :-)

Thanks, Belsonc. I got some really good scoresheets from the B.E.E.R. competition. Well filled out, reasoned feedback. I am looking forward to what is on the ones from Longshot.

The first years score sheets from the longshot were ok, last years were a bit disappointing in terms of information on them.

By "first year" are you referring to 2006? I entered that one, but not last year.
I ask the question because they actually ran a Longshot competition back in the mid-90s, which I would consider the "first year."
I entered that one. Every entrant got either 0.5# or a full pound of EKG pellets. :D
