View Full Version : Fixing the rubber top on a corny keg

I have a corny keg and the rubber ring around the top has come loose (the big ring around the top that has the handles built into it).
Has anyone had any luck re-attaching these to the keg. I suspect some kind of glue would be the only way, what type of glue did you use and did it hold for long, or should I just throw the ring away.
Thanks

Are you referring to the gasket that fits on the lid??

Nope, the big rubber part that is attached to the top of the keg and surrounds the connector bodies and has the handles built into it.
One of my used kegs did not come with this part. It's harder to handle this keg than the rest because it's missing the handles. But now this part is coming off another one of my kegs, and I want to save it if I can. Every time I pick up this keg by the handle, it comes a little farther off. It's now loose enough to pop the wire thingy that holds the lid in place.

Seems like rubber cement or an epoxy would work. I would probably try rubber cement first. If everything is clean, it makes a great bond and its pretty cheap.

Epoxy may crack as it usually is not real flexible...you might try the adhesive used to attach trimwork or moulding to car bodies; check what your local auto parts store has.

super glue. you need it to be strong enough to pick up 5 gallons of beer with.
Just out of curiousity, how do you store your kegs? What kind of climate are you in? I have never seen that part come off on a keg before, are you pretty abusive with yours?

It was loose when I bought it. I think the coke company is rounding them all up and sending them to be recycled. Some of the ones that I've seen have been in pretty bad shape. You can't be too choosy at the place I was shopping.
I think I'll try the rubber cement first, and if that does not work, then the super glue.
I like the duct tape idea (Do you ever watch the "Red Green" show?), but I don't know if it would support the weight.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I agree with Bluesharp. I would try the glue used to attach side molding to cars. Body men call it "gorilla snot". It is yellow and looks nasty, but works great for rubber/plastic to metal application. I think it is made by 3M.
