this is clipped/modified from my post in the Tasting Notes board, and i thought i'd post and expand on it here, where it's more on point:

i think perhaps the best matched, and most interesting contests of BoB 2003 are set to occur in the quarter-final rounds of the Bistro: Shakespeare v. Barney Flats, Arrogant Bastard v. 90-Minute, and HopDevil v. Liberty are all great match-ups, and emerging winners from these showdowns should beat the hell out of anything from the other three brackets, except *maybe* SNPA and Alaksan Smoked Porter.

(but SNPA is more of a bioregional, sentimental favorite for this native Sacramentan: Liberty, Arrogant, and HopDevil are all arguably better beers toe-to-toe, while admittedly being IPA styles when compared to SNPA, the definition of the classic APA style. tho i once had a spolied SNPA from a Cupertino Safeway, but i won't talk about those particular tasting notes unless someone asks.)

i'm looking forward to these match-ups in a big way, more so, than, say, yawnfests like Grain Belt Premium v. Yuengling Lager, and Shiner Bock v. Michelob AmberBock. i mean, i know BoB has to have some not-as-exciting matchups, but these first-rounders paled in compare to:

the Big Beer Maker Bash:
North Coast Red Seal Ale v. Three Floyd's Alpha King,

the thoughtful:
Ommegang v. Allagash Double Ale,
and
Pyramid Hefeweizen v. Harpoon Hefeweizen

and the bizarrely lopsided:
Avery Hog Heaven 29% v. Arrogant Bastard Ale 71%
and
Lagunitas IPA 33% v. Victory HopDevil IPA 67%

or the nailbiters:
Tabernash Weiss 48% v. Widmer Hefeweizen 52%
and
New Glarus Belgian Red Style 48% v. Flying Fish Abbey 52% (perhaps the biggest travesty of 2003 so far, recalling the appalling 2002 result of: Flat Tire 54%, New Glarus Belgian Red 46%)

whoa! it's getting hot in here: i better get a beer!
