Let's assume the wife needs to get away from her family during our month stay with them in France. We haven't been to the Alsace region yet so we're thinking about it. What are our beer options over there? Are there any interesting French breweries or should we keep going into Germany.

IIRC, I sampled more wine in Strassbourg than beer, though I did have a nice Belgian Ale at a small bistro (served by a very pretentious waiter).

Across the river, into Baden Baden, there are some great bierhalls and restaurants with great selections.

I'd also recommend looking into the Brauerie Gasthaus venues in the area -- fun stays there!

Here's a link I was looking for:
http://www.braugasthoefe.de/cms/core/index.php

I've stayed at a few of these places and always enjoyed myself -- and the beer!

Thanks steveh. You completely ruined my work day. I've been trying to figure how many of these I can stay at in a week. Just reading some of the menus(beer and food) has got me drooling at my desk.

Well hell -- I tried responding and lost my link!!!!!

What I'd already typed was:
The Lamm in Untergröningen is a quaint little place in a quiet town. The bierhall seems somewhat sleepy, but when dinner time rolls around it becomes the hot spot. Food and beer are great and the crowd will make your stay.

To the east the Roter Ochsen in Ellwangen has nice sidewalk seating and great beer. The town is a little bigger and has some more shops to explore.

After that, you may as well head into Stuttgart to sample beers from their 3 breweries.

Also of note, this group isn't the complete list of Braugasthof in Germany, there are many independents that aren't affiliated with this site.

Man -- looking at the pictures of the Lamm and the Bad Wörishofer Löwenbräu are making me sort'a homesick! :(

Har -- that's something I don't need a lot of instruction on, but I'm willing to sign up for the refresher course! Favorite of the GF and me right now, Wrongo Dongo from Spain.

My pleasure on the advice, I only ask for good reports back!

So here's the trip. Hit Germany and spend the night in Freiburg, then 2 nights each in Loewenbraeu-Bad-Woerishofen near Munich, Salzbach-Rosenburg outside of Nuremburg, and Heidelburg. And we may make a side trip to Plzn Chzechoslavakia(sp) when we leave Salzbach-Rosenburg. We got reservations at brewery guesthouses from the website you posted for every night but Freiburg. I can't wait, even Brigitte's pretty excited about it and she's no beer fiend.

We just got Lamm Brau in our area. Pils and a dunkel. Quite good. The Dunkel is not ABD, but good none-the-less. Pils was really good.

I tried to get reservations there but there's a serious disconnect between me and Germany when it comes to calling, and they don't take online reservations. Also, they were a little too close to Freiburg and we wanted to get closer to the Bodensee and Munich for our first real stop. But I will be stopping often and buying beer as we go through areas we aren't staying in.

I doubt that's the same Lamm as the Gasthaus in Untergröningen -- that place is tiny. I suppose they could be having it contracted, but I don't know why they'd bother with exporting - considering all the competition.

ABD?

I just remembered to mention this -- once you're in country, many of the places you stay at will be happy to call another spot for you and make a reservation. I'm pretty sure we did that from Baden Baden to the Lamm -- maybe for similar reasons.

I believe Kronenbourg and Fischer are from that area.
