Had ToneyC at my house this past weekend to give him a little introduction to all grain. I was brewing my highly regarded Oatmeal Stout. He really got to see the in's and out's of all grain especially since I had a stuck run-off(geez that kinda thing has to happen when you're trying to move it along). The recipe has a pretty substantial oats component so I guess it's not that stunning.

Anyway he and I had a really good time and I think he's going to give all grain a try. Brewing with another brewer is a lot of fun - I highly recommend it. He and I are going to do it again.

All I can say is that if my first all-grain brew session goes as well as that one, I'll be one happy camper! The subheading for this section says it all: "Its not as hard as you think." There is only one piece of equipment that I don't have, yet, and that's the false bottom. I'll pick one of those up next week, along with an all-grain recipe, probably the Texas Blonde recipe from AHS and give it a shot the weekend of December 6th. I'm still contemplating coming in and doing it under Fast_Eddy's supervision or going it on my own, since it is about a 120 mile round trip. I'm doing a lot of driving over the holidays, so I may even put off brewing for another week. Anyway, it was a great experience and it has opened my eyes to a whole new range of good beer!

i'd actually like to be "mentored" as well, seeing as i'll be switching to all-grain sometime after the holidays.

anyone within a 1.5 hr. drive from boston?

OK, I did it. I just finished brewing my first all-grain batch. According to the instruction sheet from AHS, I missed the OG by 8 points. They say it should be 1.045, I got (corrected) 1.037. Promash says I should have gotten 1.042. I think I may have sparged too fast, would that have caused my low OG?

Despite the slight error in OG, I had FUN!! It was great mashing the grains. I feel closer to what I envisioned when I started this hobby. Malt extract syrup always seemed sort of like cheating. I know it isn't, but it isn't what I wanted to do. Anyway, I'm jazzed. I will be waiting with tapping foot for this batch to be drinkable.

Thank you again, Fast_Eddy! I need to bring you some beer in a few weeks! Hopefully, I'll have read the book you lent me by then. I'm only about 25% through it now.

Toney,

It was my pleasure. Your missed OG could be you didn't mash long enough or you were out of the temp range or too low mash pH or etc.....

Welcome to all grain ;)

also dont forget that everyone has their own efficiency. You will never hit a recipe dead on until you figure out and account for your efficiency.
