I saw this a few weeks ago and couldn't resist. It's one of the Samuel Adams Longshot beers for 2008. My mind first said "grape juice" when I read the title, but my logical side told me SA wouldn't spend money producing and touting a homebrew that tastes like Welch's, so against my initial instinct I picked up a bottle.
The Grape Pale Ale, from Lili Hess of Hawai’i, is the strangest name for a beer I’d heard since Arrogant Bastard came out in the late ‘90’s. Using white grape extract and maple syrup in the recipe, a chardonnay-like quality is imparted unto the beer, giving it a mildly sharper character than your standard pale ale. This makes for a uniquely refreshing beer, and, given the Island State’s penchant for fruit (even though grapes aren’t normally thought of as being Hawai’ian), it’s no surprise that this beer hits the mark. I'd have this again in a heartbeat - pales are almost all the same, and it's nice to have an interesting alternative. It's worth at least a bottle to try.
