View Full Version : Using O2 not CO2

So in the kegerator we have a pale ale and some root beer, which are both now force carbonated and they taste so much better!

We started joking about having a keg of iced tea now but then started to actually consider it (were big ice tea drinkers).

So we could easily fill a corny keg thats no problem but we figure hooking it up to the co2 would carbonate it and thats not really something we want (but who knows it might be good)

So if we get a separate bottle of compressed oxygen instead will the ice tea carbonate, i mean carbonate comes from CARBON dioxide right? We just need some kind of pressure to use the tap and figured compressed air would be best

anyway sorry about the non beer post i just didnt know really where to take this question.

I believe low pressure nitrogen would be the best bet. At work we have a wine cuvenee (taps) that have nitrogen. Just enough to keep the O2 off and force it out when the taps are open, but it never carbonates.

Go with the nitrogen, it's inert so it won't make off flavours like O2 might.
Also, carbonation is due to gas coming out of solution, not necessarily CO2. So you might be able to use low pressure CO2 with out any real carbonation. I remember reading a link saying that 3psi should be used for moving beer from keg to keg, so maybe try something like that.

I second trying that - I would perform a test with just water in a keg and only put a couple of pounds of co2 to it. I'm for anything that will not cost more money.

That's a really good idea, why didn't I think of that?

Oxygen ruins tea as fast as it does beer. Go with low pressure CO2 as already suggested.
