It seems to be a "brown Belgian ale" hybrid. You'll have some very heavy caramel/chocolate notes from the grain, but the hops flavor will be more like an English ale.

Quick question: Is this recipe from somewhere, or is it an entirely original formulation?

It's original...came up with it about half an hour ago. No big deal to me...I do it all the time.

Sorry Beerconnoisseur I was tired and forgot to ask what the imprtance of the recipe being a copy or an original? Is this a good recipe or just unusual?

My inquiry was part reflective of the unique recipe I created/brewed recently. Although I loved the malt flavors, the hop taste wasn't quite what I was hoping for. So, if I had to do it again, I think I might get better results by taking an original recipe, tweaking it until I get what I want, then trying to reproduce it consistently.

Here was my recipe, if you are interested in trying it out:

Malt Extract:

6 lbs. German Pilsner

Grain:

1 lb. Crystal 15L
1 lb. Caravienne

Hops:

1 oz. 6% AA Perle (45 minutes, boiling)
1 oz. 6% AA Perle (5 minutes, flavoring)
1 oz. 11.1% AA Newport (2 minutes, aroma)

Yeast:

1 vial White Labs California Ale Yeast V

(These ingredients are available from Morebeer.com)

If I had to make modifications, I would switch to a German Lager yeast, and use a blend of 0.5 oz. Hallertauer and 0.5 oz. Tettnanger hops for bittering only. I may give this recipe a shot again in the near future; it wasn't all bad!
