I'm just curious what your thoughts are about this recipe...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Rat Brown Ale (American Brown Ale)

3# Laaglander light DME
3# M&F DME

8 oz. 50L Crystal
4 oz. Choc Malt

1.25 oz. Fuggles (at beginning of boil)
1 oz. UK East Kent Goldings (45 minutes into boil)

Calculated OG = 1.059
IBU's = 34.5

I'll probably use Safale S-04 dry yeast this time around (lack of funds), and I've found it to be the most consistent dry yeast around. Anyway, it's a Whitbread ale strain, so it should be fairly appropriate. I may switch to Wyeast 1098 for the next batch.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

On a side note - why isn't Laaglander DME in Promash? It doesn't seem that uncommon. I replaced it with "generic" DME in recipe formulation. Does anyone know which of the DME's listed are closest to Laaglander as far as amount of fermentables?

May I ask why you are using 3# of Muntons and 3# of Laaglander? Why not use the same brand?

Laaglander doesn't ferment out as much. I'm hoping for a slightly sweeter, heavier ale - but not too much so, thus the 3# Muntons.

I'll see how this turns out and adjust from there.

I'm thinking of 86ing the finishing hops and adding 1/2# of oatmeal in with the specialty grains.

Anyone ever tried and oatmeal brown ale? I really like my oatmeal stout, so this is sounding pretty good.

/listens to the sound of crickets chirping...

I went ahead and added 1/2# of oatmeal to the specialty grain steep. It's bubbling away in the primary right now. If anyone's interested I'll let you know how it turns out.

Quick question: Did you mash the oatmeal?

Nope. I just steeped it with the specialty grains.
