I've asked about this before, I just want to make sure it's totally ruined before I smash it. I have a 5 gallon glass carboy with a small hairline crack in it, maybe 2 inches long. If it can hold 5 gallons of water with no problem is it an ok assumption it can be used as a secondary fermentor? Or is that just stupid to even try?

I wouldn't even try it. If you put beer in it and something hits it, or bumps it, you could be looking at a giant mess and a loss of 5 gallons of beer that you worked really hard on. For an investment of another $20 or so, you can be sure of what you have.

If the crack goes all the way from outside to in, there's no way of getting it clean within -- many little beasties can congregate and cause you trouble.

Aside from Deco's good advice...

I will back up the two posts from the two gents smarter than I.

I would disagree with you usually, but I have never volunteered to have people fire frozen rubber blocks at my head. LOL

Consider it smashed! Thanks for the advice.

Well, Hibernia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibernia) was the Roman's name for Ireland, and the Irish know a thing or two about drinking and Stouts, so it's a very fitting name on many levels.

On a side note I found a tiny fracture inmy favorite Italian glass 6 gallon carboy that I've had forever. I didn't think twice about putting it in the recycling bin as sad as it made me. Just think about picking up 5+ gallons of wort/beer and having the glass come apart in your arms. I picture seeing a lot of blood and bone.
