View Full Version : Do you name your batches?
Do you name the beers you brew? Are you creative or descriptive?
if i make a beer more than once, even to tweek the recipe, it gets a separate worksheet in excel with a name, usually unique. my irish red ale is called maureen o'hara, for instance. just something that makes the beer that much more interesting, especially as i stabilize some core recipes.

I've had a batch called Hulk Smash Crap beer - do a search for the story.
Four days ago, I was propping up a Budvar 2000 strain and decided to make a one gallon batch(from leftovers) to harvest from instead of a normal starter - brewed it in about 50 minutes - called it Piss Poor Pils.
Congrats b3s on 600.

I normaly don't name my beers. I have a couple get nick names so to speak because of the reason I brewed them. I have toyed with the idea of ice hockey related names. see below:
Blue line Barleywine
Sin bin pale ale
Goal post red
My main problem with naming is I don't keep records. I don't think I have produced the same beer twice.

I name all the batches and if I change anything in the recipe I change the name as well.
I think the one that I have not changed is my Irish Ale which we named after my youngest boy (Colm Padraig Irish Ale) and my Porter which is named for my nephew Finn Porter.
Other then that if we do a knockoff we try to knock off the name too. Our Bass Ale clone is Fish Pale, my smoked is Miss Kitty's Gunsmoked Lager and so on.
Good names, brewmonkey! That's pretty creative.
Once I actually have another batch, I'll name it according to mood and all those other undefinables. My most recent (after 5 years without brewing) is a brown ale that is ready for the secondary. I've been toying with a few names, but won't settle on one until I drink it (if it turns out well).

Then how about:
Lady Bing Lager
Power Play Pale Ale
Stanley Cup Stout
Penalty Shot Porter
Goal Crease Kriek
We had to open up all of my first batch of root beer and re-yeast it to see if we could get it going again. If we're successful, we're going to name it Resurrection Root Beer.

Hey Fret, I like the stout and porter. Can I use them? Also, best name yet for a root beer.

I named my last brew. An attempt at a Double IPA. Since it was a made up recipe, made without a clue.....

There's a brewpub in Ft. Collins, CO, called Coopersmith's that named one of their beers "NOT Brown Ale." ;)

mostly i come up with descriptive names. for example, i called my oatmeal stout "Oatmeal Stout" (aren't i clever?). but a beer has to earn a creative name. for example, my IPA that didn't carbonate, cuz i moved it to me 55* basement immedieately after bottling earned the name "Cold Basement IPA." (i warmed it up, and it did carbonate eventually)

I've been homebrewing for about 4 years now and I name every batch I make and make a label for it as well using a software program called Printmaster. I actually won an award for my "Old Companion Ale" in the Brew Your Own magazine annual label contest a couple years ago. I guess I like the creative part of coming up with a unique name and label to go with the beers I make. I brewed a Scotch ale last month and in honor of Johnny Cash (rest in peace!) I named it "A Beer Named Sue". (not posted on my site yet.) If you'd like to see the names and labels of my homebrews, I've posted them on my website. Here's a link to it:
Province Creek Brewing (http://home.earthlink.net/~davesarman1/id2.html)
I live in the Povence Creek development, hence the name...
There is one I named.
Honey, MY NUTS! Brown Ale.
Also, I named a rather nasty one Irish Red Ass.

"$h!t for Brains Imperial Stout" was born last winter. It is a 9%abv brew that kicks you in the head.
"The Shadow Knows Oatmeal Stout" is a recipe I got from a guy on another forum. His handle there is "The Shadow". I brewed it once and then tweaked it to my likes. I liked the shadow theme being it is a dark beer.

It is something that I always threaten to do, but unfortunately my inherent laziness always wins out. There was only one time that a beer of mine was named by me. I was watching a friends dog for them and she was insistent on being under my feet while I was brewing and after struggling with her all day I named the beer little brown bear after her. usually I just mark the caps with the style and sometimes the date.

If my barleywine/stout turns out, I'm going to call it, "Instant Atomic Orgasm." If it doesn't turn out, I'm going to use some much more descriptive words.
Personally, I only name beers I create. If it's a kit, it gets the name on the kit. If I invent a beer or significantly modify a recipe, I give it a creative name. Anyone for a bottle of "Tipsy Tree Tapper?" (maple)

Since I AM a Rocket Scientist, I give my beers space-related names!
Extra Nut Brown Ale (<<Before I decided on space names! lol)
Pluto Porter
Chiron Chimay
Rover Red Ale
Dark Side Dunkel (Pink Floyd Rocks!)

I have tried to name my Homebrews because I found that now that I have 25 gallons or so in the spare bedroom, I need to keep them separated. I usually named them after the ABV% or date brewed or something newsworthy just for fun. I do some labels on my printer and a few weeks ago I could't figure out what to name one when in the backgound I heard the TV and it was a Michael Jackson Pop Star report. Ah... You're thinking Jesus Juice? Nope. Label Reads... From the Neverland Brewery. Judas Juice, with a clipart of a guy hanging himself. And Michael Jackson's Black Pale Rubba Rubba Ale. Next batch is My Sista's One Tit Exposed Halftime Ale. Oh the possibilities.

I mentioned it elsewhere several times, but I'll re-reiterate (Welcome to the Dept. Of Redundancies Dept.): On Jan.4, 2004, the very day Matt Hasselbeck told the ref (and the rest of the world), "We want the ball, and we're going to score!" and promptly threw an interception/touchdown....
"Seattle Seahawk Sore Loser Stout" was born.

When I'm settled, have a brewing fridge, and find just the right recipe, I think I will. I'll serve it a little earlier than I ought to and tell people it needs to AGE a little more before it matures...

Yes, the trials and tribulations of being a 'Hawks fan.... I know them well.
Have I ever expounded on why it's so great to be a Seattle supporter? When they lose, so what? It's Seattle, fer cryin' out loud... what didja expect? However, when they WIN... IT'S AN EVENT! HOORAY! DID YOU HEAR? THE SEAHAWKS WON A GAME!
Much like being a Cubs fan, except the Cubbies at least have SOME hope.... :(

To stay on topic.
Now that I am formulating my own recipes more and more I will be thinking up more names.

Shouldn't a beer named for Michael Jackson be a White? :D

I got creative and named one of my usual brews after my daughter "Amber Ale"

I have named some of them. I am currently drinking the oatmeal stout I brewed the day they caught Saddam, I call it my Spiderhole Stout. There is the Amber Lynn Ale named after the hottest porn star from my teen years.

Well the bad news is that my "Beam Me Up Bitter" ran out yesterday and the "Dark Side Dunkel" is almost out.
The good news is that I brewed a "Cassini Celebration Ale" AND a "Saturn Imperial Stout" yesterday!

Latest IPA is "Cheif Hopocan IPA."
Named for some Indian cheif that lived in this area during the early 1800's. I used my homegrown hops in this batch. So, I thought "Hopocan" and "hops" went together pretty well.
Other names"
Ant Farm Ale
Bad Dog lager
Sucker Punch Stout

Like I mentioned before, I started to name mine after current events to help me remember back when I brewed it... My most recent that is drinkable is: "Harvest Moon" How ingenious.
I'm starting to get spooked though. Every time I brew now there is some sort of catastrophy!
Before that was a "Blue Moon"
I did a "Hurricane"
Now I'm doing a "Volcano"
I'm thinking of calling my next batch "Rapture" but it may be my last!

I hope your "volcano" brew doesn't act like one when you pop the top!

Hopefully it will just pop off a little steam cloud.
I thought about naming it Eruption but nothing has happened with the Volcano...yet. That is one of my favorite Van Halen Screams though... or is that Atomic Punk?
Timezup... I need a Harvest Moon...or is that Brew Moon.... er, Blue Moon... I forget... help!
