Beer in Moldava or Romania

I just watched a documentary by Michael Palin on Moldava and he said that the country of Moldava was the poorest country in Europe. SO, I'm thinking "great travel bargain!" Is there any one that knows about brewing traditions/customs there?
The area is a large producer of wine and sometimes that means the culture leans away from beer in favor of wines and wine based cuisine.
