Where did you get that term, anyway? And since I know you're in Denver, what store do you go to exactly? Just curious...
got that saying from my GF...i don't know where she got it exactly....always found it amusing "don't forget, we need to stop at the paint store!"...just always got a kick out of that.
the place i go is union street liquor in lakewood...just 5 minutes from the apartment...advertising over 600 different beers.
heh, just asked her where she got the term from. she either got it from her father or her first husband, but has no clue why the person responsible would have called it that.

Reasons why I am glad I married my wife.
If I told her I spent $40 at the paint store she would have said "why didn't you get some bob's 47 instead!" :D

I'd LOVE to see your house after THAT trip to the paint store!
And it is a cool term. It almost helps unify all of the different regional terms...liquor store, package store, abc, etc...i'm in!

I was thinking of the ABC stores in the south, but you can't get beer there huh? That's just in the Supermarkets and GasNSips and what not...
Sorry, in NJ it's one-stop shopping for all of your alcohol needs!

In Virginia liquor is sold in state ABC stores as well as a couple beers and wine. Most Beer and wine are sold in specialty shops, grocery, convenience stores or at the brewery/winery. DC and Maryland have liquor stores that are privately owned and you can purchase beer, wine, liquor. Some counties in MD have county controlled liquor store as well. These only sell liquor. Wicomico County where Ocean City is has these county stores. But you can buy beer and wine at specialty stores. I hate the PA distribution system. You have to buy beer by the case unless you buy it in a bar.

Ha ha ha yep. Funny you mention that. I am an ET (electrician) in manufacturing, but a couple of weeks ago I was an ET turned painter. My company had some big clients taking a tour at our plant and the powers that be decided painting the plant was a good idea.
When the paint came in, it was Porter paint and one of the colors we had (for our door trim in the offices etc.) was nut brown. Of course I thought it was pretty funny, but no one else at my work could have caught the humor. I did catch my buddy Eric, a machine keeper (mechanicwho also helped paint) who works with me at my local liquor store after work and I had to point out the Sam Smiths Nut Brown Ale to him. He's more of a Bud/Coors/Miller or liquor guy, but he got a kick out of it.

...here in Wisconsin, in order to find a place to buy beer, you have to look for the sign in the window...."OPEN".....:D
heh, i'm at my fiancee's place in OR. OR has some pretty screwy laws (at least this part of OR).
a "paint store" only sells liquor...if you want beer, you have to go to the grocery store.
so we had to go to the paint store and the grocery store to score the booze and beer.

In Hawaii the ABC Store (http://www.abcstores.com) are tourist specialty stores, but some do have beer & wine, and I was able to buy Kona Brewing IPA there.
On the wife front, mine tries to schedule trips to North County San Diego based on when Stone Brewing's open to fill our growlers: "Get whatever you want, unless they've got Levitation Ale on tap."

In ontario there are "the beer store" and LCBO liquor control board of Ontario, they are both government owned.
The Beer Store was the first store in town to have separate parking lot entrances, one for coming IN, and one for going OUT.
I guess to control the increased traffic.
those are the first signs you see posted from the road so we used to call it "the IN and OUT store"

Ya, sometimes they have a half-decent selection for Hawaii, but all in all they are a rip-off tourist store(at least beer wise), theres one a few blocks from where I live and the employees working there are generally assholes. Although, if you just want a soda and a candy bar its not going to be much more then gas station, thing is I never just want a soda and a candy bar.
Stopped in a specialty beer&wine store thats pretty far away today while on the other side of the island, got a Celebration Doppelbock for 2.40$, gonna have that later on. Its nice to see a reasonable beer floating around here, especially happy that I didn't have to buy a case or even a 6-pack of it. *smiles* Peace, HN- :p

I thought of this thread while motoring down some county roads I don't travel frequently. I spotted an older bar that had been around a while, but is now sporting a new name: "The Hardware Store."
Appears that the new proprietors are using the same diversionary tactics as "The Paint Store." "Honey, I have to run over to the 'hardware store,' be back in a while." I wonder if the specialty house drink is "The Screwdriver?" ;)
Also, Houghton, Michigan - home to Michigan Tech and Houghton College - has a bar/restaurant, now a fine brew-pub, called "The Library." "We tried to call you all evening yesterday dear, but you were never home." "Yesterday? I was at 'the library' mom!"

I think going to the "paint store" is equal to a saying we used to use a lot.....
I'll be back soon, gotta go see a man about a dog.

Yeah we had one of those in Fairfax too. Near George Mason University.

Used to be a "Library" in Ft. Collins, too... right by CSU. It's changed names so many times I don't know what it is anymore...
(Just where in the world did we get the phrase "I have to see a man about a horse/dog/whatever"? Does it have the same origins as women saying that they have to "powder their nose"?)

Don't know about a "Library" in Fort Collins. I do know there is one in Laramie WY. I haven't been yet, but my wife has.

The Library used to be on Elizabeth, just west of campus. I forget what bar it is right now, but it's in the same building as Panhandler's Pizza. The bar has been called Tanq's, Gators, and a bunch of other things... "The Library" used to be a 3.2 bar, of all things! How gauche! ;)
