Look different?

The look, and even some functional parts, may change a bit in the next week or so as we figure out just what is here.

Please use this forum to discuss problems and to offer solutions.

You guys will be way ahead of me on most things.

Thanks

Uh yeah -- different -- the "blue" period.

For those looking, check the "Quick Links" drop down, above right, for "Today's Posts." Sort of the "Latest Posts" link.

Two old considerations that admin may have control of by now:

1) Length of post (currently 10,000) and PM (currently 1500ish)

2) Amount of smilies permitted (currently ONE, which is just sad ;) )

Site looks good! It will take some getting used to, but I like it!!! Well done!

Why would I want to increase that? That's a serious question.

The PM is 1492, BTW.

And smilies, maybe I could be talked into two :(

Clicking the "new posts" link brings up a list of 5 posts, that I already ready a short while ago, and the info on the page says "Search took 0.01 seconds; generated 32 minute(s) ago. Search: New Posts"

I just clicked it, why not a search that was generated now instead of previously?

fretlessman71

It would mean I wouldn't have to seriously tweak my Porter Thread in order to be able to use it in the manner I intended, for one... but that's just a personal issue - I understand it would probably only benefit me, so no biggie...

And two smilies would be a big step - it would mean that you wouldn't have to go back and erase someone's smiley from the quoted text if you wanted to include your own. Three would probably serve everyone well and keep people from overusing them. Whatcha think?

Don't worry - you'll have a search generated 32 minutes in the future, sometime in the future, to make up for "lost time". ;)

I noticed the two issue when I responded the first time (adding a smilie, so I had to subtract yours).

I'll take it on up two three, but reserve the right to pull one.

Like if people start using the hop smilie too much and we end up with a shortage. :) [and tested to see if it works]

Like anybody cares about the history of Realbeer.com but the color scheme on and design of the discussion boards came first, with the rest of the site following. And I picked the colors, look, etc. (So my feelings aren't hurt.)

We'll likely jazz this up a little when putting other pages in place at Real Beer.

But I'm pretty sure I won't be allowed to pick the colors this time :(

And, before anybody asks, the reading and writing area will remain black and white. That's a much better idea than I had.

Apparently some parts of the database got jostled in transport, so we were getting birth date where location should be.

Then we were getting ZIP (you just need to memorize a lot of numbers and you are set).

No reason not to get back to location . . . eventually.

How many times have I wanted to read what's new, gone to the page, closed the page by accident, had to go somewhere for a few minutes, and come back to find that the cookies had reset? This solves the problem wonderfully! Many kudos to Stan for doing this for all of us - THREE CHEERS! :D :D :D (One smiley for each cheer, of course.)

OK. I generally like the changes, and I am finding new features I like everyday.

Still, I have one complaint. It used to be, if I logged on but did not select "View New Posts" the system did not count that as reading the forums. Now, I find that I logged on earlier this AM to check my PMs, and when I select "New Posts" the system is assuming that the last time I logged on I read the forums. This means I have lost "New Posts" from ~9 PM last night until 7AM this morning, and have to search the forums manually.

Is there anyway we can set that option back the way it was, so I don't reset my "New Posts" unless I actually select it?

Kingo -- if you go to "Quick Links," on the right above, click into the "Today's Posts" in the drop-down, you'll be taken to a list of the most recent posts in chrono order -- might not be a perfect fix, but you can scan what you've read and what you haven't (boldface).

I believe this is the best solution as well. When I log on from different computers, they have their cookies set differently, and I'm sometimes able to see new posts, sometimes not; sometimes able to keep them fresh if I just log onto the homepage, sometimes not. This solves the problem and at least lets you see what you've missed.

I still wish we had the old "New Posts" back. Used to be, I could click on it, spend as much as a few hours reading through them (switching back and forth between work and the forums), and when logged off and returned the system remembered when I last clicked "new posts," and showed me posts since I last checked it.
Now, if I spend a few hours reading my "new posts," when I log off and return, the "new posts" feature only looks for posts after I last logged off. This means as much as 3-4 hours of "new posts" are missing to me.

Any chance we can get that function back to the way it was?

Something seems to be wrong with the filter on the "Recipes" forum in "Homebrewing."
I go to the forum, and it is showing me a bunch of old threads, with "last posts" going back several years. I tried filtering the thread for posts in the last 2 days, and it told me it was only displaying one thread (only one matched the filter), but it actually was showing me everything. Plus, the threads were shown in reverse order. I had it set for newest post first, but it was showing them newest post last.

it appears that 3 months later and the search function is still broke! (at least for me)

example: the user "oog" created a post titled "brewbie" on 2-8-07. if you search for the title "brewbie" you get nothing! if you search for the misspelled word "premisis" he has in the post, you get nothing. if you search for his username "oog", you see the post. (i have the date range maximized)

Look on the left column. Click on "Edit Avatar"
I think you will figure it out from there.

That's the thing, I go there and all I can do is select a few pre-canned avatars. I don't have an option to pick a custom avatar. That's why I brought this up.

So what's the post # you need to learn the handshake? :)

Look just below the canned avatars, there are instructions for making your own. basically, you are limited to 70 x 70 pixels or 19.5kb, which ever is less.
You can upload via you computer, or put in a web address.

I'll screen shot and show what I see. I swear to ya'll, there is nothing there for me to do regarding a custom avatar. I can pick no avatar, or I can cycle through two pages of pre-canned avatars and that is it. No instructions, no radio button to select a custom one... nuttin'.

I'll screen shot it when I get to work. Got a good program for that :)

I've tried this on IE 7 and Firefox 2.0 and both do the same thing.

While we're at it, I also don't see a way to change my tag line or whatever you call it. Hmm..
