While I occasionally drink wine at an Italian restaurant and maybe a Tanquery salty dog at a club, I drink beer pretty much 98% of the time when I want an alcoholic beverage. Having said that, one thing you will always find at my house is a bottle of Maker's Mark. Though I am an absolute idiot about bourbon whiskey, I do know I like this stuff. I don't drink much of it as a fifth (750 ml) lasts me about 2-3 months, but what little I do drink of it, I enjoy (on the rocks.) I am curious if anyone here has a favorite non-beer alcoholic beverage ?

I'm a huge single malt scotch fan. I'm partial to the Highland malts, the more malty of the scotch family. Macallan is always good, Oban is one of my favorites. I don't really care for the really peaty, smoky scotches, though. In my opinion, scotch is the next logical progression from beer.
favorite? hands down: bushmills! better than any sour mash style whiskey, although i do enjoy makers mark as well...other than that, i also drink bombay saphire gin martinis in a 3:1 mix (usually one after work but before dinner...kind of a snob that way, cocktails don't go with dinner).

Well, i'm a big bourbon fan (love my Makers), but not as big a fan as i used to be (kinda burnt myself out on manhattans for a while). My tastes for non-beer drinks tend to vary seasonally (Sapphire or Tanq matinis in spring/summer, Good tequila and rum in summer, bourbon, scotch, maybe some canadian all year round; wine all year round). If you're a Macallan fan, do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of their 'Cask Strength', a little higher in alcohol and so smooth. Also been turned onto the Jack Daniels single barrel lately.

i echo the stodbrew, i like whisky (single malt scotch). highland park, oban, laphroaig. im interested in learning more, but im still more fascinated with beer.

Single malt as well. Macallan, Laphroig, Talisker...
As for Bourbon- Wild Turkey and Maker's Mark. I also enjoy a lot of wines...
and Port.
They all go well with a good cigar.

I too like the single malts. I was always under the impression that oban and laphroig were islay whiskeys. And the glens and what nots were higlands. The laphroigs and obans that I have had have been the peatiest of the peaty.

Laphroig IS very peaty and smokey. I prefer the maltier Dalmore. Maker's Mark is excellent bourbon (a hot item here in Missouri) and I like the peachiness of Jim Beam.
well, i'm not much of a scotch drinker, but when i do drink scotch, i obviously prefer lowland single malts given my preference for bushmills and other (rarer) irish whiskeys :)

I would also have to say single malts. I'm a novice, but I do know that a little single malt on a cold evening warms the cockles! My wife and I took a 3 week vacation to Scotland in 2001 and we spent some time on the Whiskey Trail! Toured a few distilleries and a cooperage. The cooperage was fascinating, especially if you've ever done any kind of woodworking. I loved Scotland. The people are fantastic and the beer is great. I'd go back in a second!

For distilled spirits I like Makers' Mark and Don Julio Anejo Tequila. Black label Jim Beam will sometimes do in a pinch.

I drink beer 99.9% of the time, even BMC if it's all I can get, but when I'm in the mood for somthing non-beer I'll go with Apple Pucker mixed with Sprite. Sometimes I'll have a whisky sour...don't like my hard stuff "neat", altho Jamesen (sp?) 12 yr old is very smooth.

I like the single malt scotches and wine. I agree after touring some distilleries in Scotland That it is the next logical step from beer. I would whole heartedly recommend "MALT ADVOCATE" Magazine for the whiskey / whisky enthusiasts among you. They also have some articles on beer (but not like they used to). It is absolutely the best and most informed mag out there. I let my subscription lapse this year after about 10 years because the focus has been on Whiskey rather than beer. I drink beer 98% of the time. The magazine is edited by none other than well known beer/ whiskey writer Lew Bryson. See posts about the MA on another thread from a while back.

If ever given a chance to visit the Makers Mark distillery it will surely be a surprise. Its hard for me to believe such an excellent bourbon shipped worldwide comes from a barn about the size of my garage. Such a small backwoods distillery..with a couple vats of mash and a storage barn. I was impressed to see 3 old ladies hand dipping the wax seal. Truely incredible it can be found worldwide.

I went to their site and they do still distill their whiskey from some old houses built in the 1800's. Many of the techniques are still used today as well. That is amazing. Maybe that is why the quality is so high.
