View Full Version : need room for keg

So I've decided to go the kegging route. I got a 5g keg the other day, brought it home and held it up to the fridge for sizing. It takes up more room than I thought. Now I don't really have room for it. I share the fridge with my roommate, and he wouldn't like coming home to find the shelves missing and all his milk, oj, and whatnot squished all on one side, with my keg on the other (but he would find it neat to have a ZiegenBock on tap). So what to do? I could always refrigerate only before anticipated drinking, but I wanted to have it on tap, always chilled. I can't go the minifridge route because I can't find one cheap (I have about $20 and I can't seem to find one in the classifieds at all) and there's not really room in our small apt. for even another fermenter. I know a 3g keg is smaller, so I wouldn't have to take out all the shelves, but how much smaller? They also cost about 3x the price. Any suggestions?

3 gal cornies are roughly 8" wide, 17" tall, plus your connectors... but, for the price of a couple of them, you could afford a new fridge...

What about Tap A Draft?

Or maybe get rid of the roommate?:D

if you live in a cold climate, and have a protected outside area you could just leave it outside until you can get the scratch for a mini-fridge.
ya know....you don't HAVE to remove the shelves. just cut a hole in the shelves to fit the keg. or get some plywood to make shelves with and cut holes in that to fit the keg if you're worried about the existing shelves.
tap-a-draft is another option (works great...i'd sell mine for relatively cheaply now that i'm into full kegging).

If he's not up for it, I am. I've been planning on a tap-a-draft for a while, but haven't done it yet. If you're interested in selling, and he's not interested in your setup, please let me know. =)
On a side note - a friend of mine recently mentioned that he had about half a dozen full-sized (15 gallon) kegs that I could have.
I'm going to take them (to plan for the future), but yikes! I wish I had room to use them. Until then, it's into storage they go.
well, pm me if you're interested in the tap-a-draft...but personally, i'd cut holes in the shelves :)

Thanks for the replies. I had initially looked into the other options (tap-a-draft and whatnot) way back when, but now that I've already got a 5g keg, and co2, there's no turning back now. I'm giong to try making some shelves that will allow room for the keg; I can't just cut holes in the existing ones. I've also thought about storing the keg outside (the winter in East TX can be cold) but the landlord would see a metal canister and call the bomb squad on me. My roommate saw me taking it apart to clean it, and thought we'd have a kitchen full of shrapnel. I'm just going to have to clean out the fridge, make sure I don't have any more leftovers, and see how well I can rearrange everything. It'll be a tight fit, but it can be done. Either way, thanks for the offer, but I'll decline.

I'm stuck in Tyler, the next town down the road. Either way, I think everyone around here is in a dry county.
