My grilfriend knocked over two carboys that were both about to go into secondary fermentation. The carboys both spilled about a gallon of beer and were shook up. I put the airlocks back on but my question is will the beer still be good and should i bother to bottle it?

It should be fine. There is a slight chance of bacteria getting into the beer, but because it has already fermneted the alcohol should keep most of the beasties away. There is also a chance of oxygen getting mixed into the beer, but unless they were shaken, it should be OK. I would rack them, have a taste and bottle like normal. Then I would take your girlfriend to the eye doctor or duct tape some flash lights to her slippers.

Your beer should be fine. I would not worry too much about bateria as there is enough alcohol and yeast to prevent it from taking a foothold. Your biggest worry is that the ber may have been a little oxidized. I would not worry too much and make sure to drink it quickly.

I think it should be fine, but I think it time to put a limit on your girlfriends drink?

Thanks for all your advice! I guess I am going to limit her intake of the "vulcan imperial stout" that got her in a carboy tipping mood. I just have one more question, should i rack the beers or just let them settle until i'm ready to bottle? In other words should i risk the chance of adding more oxygen?

if they just got knocked over, i'd let them settle for a day or 2, so all the yeast drops back out. then rack to secondary as normal. then find a new girl!

think about it, how does one "accidentally" knock over not one but TWO carboys? i mean, those suckers are heavy!! just remember- there's plenty of fish in the sea... maybe she ain't the one for you! ;)

Oxidation would be minimal so I wouldn't worry about it.

On the bright side you now have someone who will help with the bottling and clean up as sort of payback for her error.

My advice: Milk it for all you can get.

I would agree about posting the picture of her---i'm just interested in whether or not she's a hottie.....2ndly, what's her shoe size??

Anyway, sounds like intentional sabotage

...sounds very suspicious. Unless she has 4 legs... then I wouldn't be surprised.

j/k, of course

had a similar (note: not the same) problem with my GF...she knocked the airlock off my carboy and for some damn reason i didn't notice for a few days....kinda pissed me off, but the beer was fine.

i'd just say: no worries, mate! beer is incredibly hard to screw up!

My kids are knocking off my airlocks all the time. It's frustrating and I seem to be the only one who cares...

well guys she is a hottie (at least that is what my a-hole friends always tell me after they hit on her right in front of me). To answer your question on how she knocked two carboys over is very simple. I had the carboys sitting on my kitchen table near a heat source. She bumbles in drunk, falls on the edge of the table and catapults both carboys into the air!

And you didn't end up with ten gallons of near-beer on the floor?

Damn, I'd be counting myself lucky!! (and getting a sturdier table...)

damn you guys need to get laid. :p

Paul, if your kids are knoccking off your airlocks regularly try getting some painters tape. I use it whenever I brew over at someone elses place. It holds the airlocks on and comes right off with little effort.
