I bought a bottle of Harviestoun Old Engine Oil Special Reserve and can't wait to try it. I guess it has been aged in single malt whiskey casks for six months. I'll pop the top tomorrow after work. Has anyone tried this before? If so let me know what you thought of it.

Hmm. Yes, I've tried it in the past, but I guess the ageing in whiskey casks didn't make a huge impression. I've recently had some brew-pub beers that were aged in bourbon casks that took on wonderful flavor from the process.

While Old Engine Oil was quite good, I didn't find it as outstanding as, say, Rock Bottom Chicago's Stout they aged in casks.

Maybe the Special Reserve is a different beer than I had?

Gawd what flavor!!! The aroma is of whiskey and malt, color is black as night, carbonation is light, mouthfeel is thick...no other way to discribe it, hops are there, but the whiskey overpowers them. I love this beer! Anyone know where I can get a single malt whiskey cask?:D

I double-checked a bottle of Old Engine Oil I have left - nope. Not the Reserve, damn.

I bought a bottle of O.E.O. about a month ago, I don't think it's the reserve, tho. I'm trying to save it for when it gets colder out.

I am very anxious to try it, however. Glad it has thus far gotten favorable feedback:)

Drink hearty!!!!

District Chophouse in Washington DC has a beer that is aged in whiskey casks. I've only had it once a couple years ago. I thought the whiskey flavor was a little overpowering. I remember not liking it too much. I can't remember what whiskey it was. Maybe Jack Daniels barrels. I know they still make this down there. I'll check it out next time. I'll bet the Harveistoun is in scotch casks. I'm a fan of single malt scotch (although beer is the supreme drink) and have visited a distillery last time I was in Scotland.

Chaz- It says right on the bottle "Aged in Malt Whisky Casks" on the front and the back specifies single malt.

Everyone- By all means get a hold of this beer if you can...my local research supply building (aka "Liquor Store") has a hard time keeping this stuff in stock and the $3.50 I payed for it was worth it. I have the bottle next to the computer and even after 2 days it still is giving off a wonderful aroma.
