I was in Boston a few weeks back for the Notre Dame Boston College football game ... we ended up at a pub called The Black Rose and some crummy dance joint (The Purple Shamrock) some dumb ...errr... @r$e told us about ... there certainly are some "chotches" in Bo town. Seemed like every pub had a color in the name. Wasn't impressed with Boston ... oh back to the topic, the Black Rose wasn't all that bad ... good beer on tap ... I drank many a' Lagers that evenin'

Dude, next time you're in Boston, do a little research or ask advice here first. Boston has some great beer spots. The Black Rose and Purple Shamrock are tourist traps. If you had asked, I'd have sent you to:
-Anam Cara Publick House - probably the best beer spot in town
-Redbones BBQ in Somerville - rotating beer menu, kick-ass BBQ, what more do you need
-Cambridge Brewing Co. - great brewpub with a new cask offering every Tuesday night
-Boston Beer Works (North Station) - big space, big beers - a stone's throw from the Fleet Center.
-Lots of other places in and around Boston like Bukowski's, Watch City Brewing, The Plough & Stars, etc.
Sorry you got stuck in the touristy part of town. Check out the BeerFly tool on BeerAdvocate.com next time - it's invaluable!
Cheers!

newportstorm, thanks for follow-up on this topic .. Coming to the site before the trip would have been the an excellent idea.. Going down there I just assumed we would have been steared in the right direction. I probably didn't go with the right folk on this trip either, perhaps that is where a lot of my disappointment comes from. Anam Cara you say, gaelic for "soul friend" is that one of your favorite spots? .... by the way ... there is a great book out called Anam Cara. Thanks again for the note and cheers to you.

I can vouch for Watch City in Waltham, Boston Beer Works near Fenway, Salem Beer Works in Salem and Was in John Harvards there once. Visited Ipswitch too. (Don't know if its still brewing.) And best of all of them Cambridge Brewing. I even miss the old Commonwealth Brewing up by the Garden. But for eating I'd go to Little Italy (Same as in Baltimore).

I concur with Chazwicke on Cambridge Brewing being the best brewpub in the area overall. We braved wind and rain and public transportation to get there last fall and it was definitely worth it. Boston Beer Works is cool, too. I like both locations, but the one by the Fleet Center is great for before or after a hockey game. It's not like how the Fenway location gets around a Sox game (crazy!).
Anam Cara is definitely a great beer spot in the city, too...

Yes, Mercury Brewing Co. still brews Ipswich brand products along with Stone Cat (not good, imo) and many house beers for local restaurants/pubs. I believe they brew soda as well now. They just bought back the rights to all of the Ipswich products as some were contract brewed in Delaware/Maryland. Just picked up a mixed Ipswich 12-pack of their Ale, Dark Ale, IPA & Oatmeal Stout. Great stuff!
And a lot of people miss the Commonwealth Brewing Co. I never got a chance to stop in and never will :(
Cheers!
