I know Italy's more of wine country, but I will be there for about a week, and was wondering if there's any must-try European beer that I will see there and can't get here in the states. Any input? I leave soon!

Check this thread of posts by Beer Blogger Stonch -- he's a big proponent of new Italian beer: http://stonch.blogspot.com/search/label/Italian%20beer

There have been several threads on Italian beer on DC-Beer. Apparently there is a burgeoning craft brew scene there. I'm happy to hear this because when I was last there we drank several of the Forst brews but nothing was that great.

Where are you going?

I can recommend these:
Baladin (Piozzo)

Starbess (Rome)

Panil

Panil Barriquée must be tried!

Baladin's beers are available in many plances - in fact I was in Venice last week and they had it in many different places.
I went to the Panil brewpub a few years ago (2003) and it was excellent - the owner / brewer Teo is a great guy with great knowledge and he had me try some of his "experiments" too.

Most of the 'good stuff' is similar to Belgian beer (in fact Teo spent several years in Belgium)

Here is a link to an article by Lorenzo Dabove - the MJ of italy:

When I was last in Italy the only drinkable beer I found was Guinness. It's good to learn that things are looking up.
