Welcome to the board, Iluvbeer!
Now, are we talking about the same Piel's I used to drink in High School, back in the mid-80's in Connecticut? Instead of Bud or Piel's, have you tried any other styles of beer, like say, a good Brown Ale, Stout, Hefeweizen, IPA, or others? It sounds like you live in the East if you're drinking Piel's, so get out there and sample all the great beers New England and the Mid-Atlantic states have to offer!

Welcome, iluvbeer.....I second what hops99 said....there is so much more to beer life than beers that are like "low grade Buds". Don't be sceered.....start with baby steps....Sierra Nevada Pale, etc.
Drink hearty, y'all!!!!

I brought a mini-keg (5 liters) of Lowenbrau Oktoberfest on my last camping trip!

Nothing like a cooler full of Leinenkugel's and a campfire.

It depends on the time of year,
but I find a nice APA or IPA to be
a good campfire companion...

I'm supposed to go camping this weekend out in Shenandoah National Park. I can guarantee that there will be some decent beer around the campfire. I already have some Youngs Chocolate and I just got an email that a limited amount of Double bastard is in stock at my local beer store . I need to get over there tonight I guess or it will sell out. Plus I need more of that bottle conditioned Conniston Bluebird.

Chaz - you're WHAT? Camping? It's 38 degrees here north of Chicago, and we're having a lake-effect blizzard! There's about an inch of wet snow on the ground right now! Brrrrrr. I sure hope it's warmer in Virginia!
I'm gonna go home tonight and sample the Bell's Batch 6000, and possible some SN Celebrator, just to stay warm!

winter camping r0x0rz.
in general i prefer a stout around the campfire...dry stout, imperial, good stuff...that or something hoppy, like a SN pale or a barleywine if it's really cold.

Here is central Texas, it is currently 60 degrees. All last week, the highs were upper 80s and the lows were lower 70s. It finally got a little cooler here Thursday but the weatherman says is going back to upper 70s to lower 60s next week. I'm in hell.

Weather was the same here in North Texas until this dang-blamed cold front blew through on Wednesday! Been rainy and cold ever since. Highs have been in the mid to lower 40's the past couple of days, with it topping out today at 50! Need some more of that warm weather up this way Toney!

Hmmm.... it is a bit of ashamed as I live in the Southeast and very near many lakes and rivers, but I rarely camp out. hen I am sitting by a fire, I like something with bite. Anchor Liberty Ale is pretty good for that.
I don't know what a Piels is, but if it's lower grade than Bud, I probably wouldn't care for it. Most of us here drink "weird beerf" as my friends call the different berrs I drink. Don't get me wrong, I have drank enough Budweiser to float an aircraft carrier, but one day I tried a Moosehead and my mind changed about what good beers are about. I don't drink Moosehead often anymore as my taste has expanded to more complicated brews but that was where I staterted.

budweiser is an excellent beer for the campfire! "for the campfire" you saw what happen to socal with the whole fire thing, better keep some close by incase the fire decides to try and creep on you! i heard someone say this on another thread ,but ,you wouldn't want to waste water ;)

I just got back from camping out inShenandoah National Park. It was in the low 20s at night up there. Cold! I drank Three Floyds Alfa Kings, Youngs Double Chocolate and Guinness both from widget cans but the best was the Sierra Nevada Celebration.

Man that's cold! I draw the line at 40° when camping!
I've camped in Shennandoah, though (got engaged there), and I must say it's a great place to be, whatever the season, i'm sure. Have you ever had any of the Shennandoah beers. I know it's not brewed right there, but they sell it in the camp stores. I tried a variety and found the Pale to be a decent beer. Didn't love the Stout or the Scotch Ale, and I can't remember the 4th. A lager maybe?

i think bells' expedition stout would be my choice around the fire. super tasty and would keep you warm and happy for hours at night.

I'll be perfectly honest with ya'll...... up there in The North it is probably already quite cold for my tastes. In LA (lower Alabama) it don't get down to 20 degrees but maybe one or two days a year. If I'm camping (which I wouldn't be in the firstplace) in that weather, I will have a bottle of Maker's Mark with me. I don't think I could really enjoy a beer in 20 degree weather unless I was EXTREMELY close to that fire. Maybe after a couple of Mark on the rocks, I would be warm enough not to spill my beer from shivering... >:P~
Then again, 100 degree days in the summer is quite commonplace here. You can appreciate some of the lighter Lagers and pils on those days. I tend to drink more of the Sam adams stuff on those hot summer days.

I saw them but did not try them. I believe they are made here in Alexandria at Shenandoah Brewing which is a brew your own as well as a brewpub.

Down here in Miami it is too hot for camping still! plus I don't know who would want to camp in a swamp. But I am from the northeast and do enjoy the beautiful woodsy outdoors of New England proper. Hmm... by the campfire? a nice schlenkrla rauchbier, or perhaps a rogue smoke ale might be especially nice to go along with the burning timbers... A nice barleywine or imperial stout might do the trick to warm you up... Or if you can get your hands on it a warm-spiced-mead would be excellent for a nordic outting.

(Send me some Isolation? I feel pretty isolated here in Nashburg...:( )

Take your time and enjoy iluvbeer. I've been on this beer quest since the mid 70s. It only gets better! My advice would be to travel, travel, travel. You'll find there is a world full of tasty brews out there now. Way better than when I was 23.

travel is what did it for me. i was always interested in beer, but a trip to england and scotland 3 years ago at the tender age of 19 (you mean i can drink legally here at 19??? w00t!!!!!!) really turned me on to the beer world. now at 22 ive tried a lot of good beer (spent way too much money too) and am always on the lookout for more.
its amazing how regional the US is in terms of beer. I love being in chicago with the availability of all the midwest beers, but its fun to come home to CA every once in a while and try to track down some new west coast offerings.
good luck iluvbeer, its fun to be young and like good beer.

There is no way I would have enjoyed Sierra Nevada Pale Ale at 23. I had to work my way up to brews like that. If you like that fairly bitter taste though, you might enjoy an Anchor Liberty Ale as well. The flagship of the brewery, Anchor Steam is a little bland to me, but the Liberty Ale is nice and hoppy and one of the few brews I enjoy just as much out of the bottle as in my favorite pils glass.

I just had an Anchor Liberty the other night, it definitely gets my recommendation.
As for camping, the last time I hit up the beach there was a case of Pacifico; that kept me happy.
