[edit] I found a web site for figuring this out:
http://oracleofbacon.org/cgi-bin/oracle/movielinks
Here are 2 more ways to link Kevin Bacon to home brewing:
Kathy Ireland has a Bacon number of 2.
Kathy Ireland was in Mr. Destiny (1990) with Maury Chaykin
Maury Chaykin was in Where the Truth Lies (2005) with Kevin Bacon
Drew Carey has a Bacon number of 2.
Drew Carey was in Big Tease, The (1999) with Kimora Lee
Kimora Lee was in Beauty Shop (2005) with Kevin Bacon

I wondered if there was a Kathy Ireland connection somewhere.
How about Bacon's band? They ever play at a brew-pub where the brewmaster may have started as a home-brewer? That would be diggin' deep!

I understand the Kathy Ireland link. . .but that is only 6 degrees. . .why does she start with 2? I don't get the bill paxton one at all. . . .it's only 5. . . .

I thought it was 6 degrees of separation or less to any person.
Now please tell me what is a bacon number?

A "Bacon Number" is how many links away the person is from Kevin Bacon (ie, the number of people in the chain not including Kevin).

All I want to know is who or what higher power made Kevin Bacon the core center of the universe as far as people are concerned? I would have thought it to be a brewer.

I don't think it's some accolade, more of a slam at how many lame roles he's taken on! Not sure what that says about Gene Hackman... :D

You can actually link any 2 actors in 6 degrees or less...I think.
My buddy and I once linked King Kong to John Wayne in like 3 degrees. We used the 1976 version with Jeff Bridges.
King Kong to Jeff Bridges
Jeff Bridges to Bruce Dern(Wild Bill)
Bruce Dern to John Wayne(The Cowboys)
Even actors that seem hard, actually aren't sometimes. Take Humphrey Bogart and Jackie Chan.
Humphrey Bogart to Audrey Hepburn(Sabrina)
Audrey Hepburn to Sean Connery(Robin & Marion)
Sean Connery to Robert DeNiro(Untouchables)
Robert DeNiro to Owen Wilson(Meet the Parents)
Owen Wilson to Jackie Chan(Shanghai Noons)
My roommate and I used to win beers at the bar being able to do this.
By the way, Gene Hackman has a Bacon number of 2.

How about Michael Caine? He's been in tons of movies too. Wonder whose been in more? Hackman or Caine?
Incidentally, I watched the original Alfie a week or so ago.

I'm surprised it's that far!! ;)
Chaz, I thought about Caine too! Thing is, I like many of the roles all 3 actors have taken on -- Hackman and Bacon both directed by Eastwood in Academy Award winning films (probably the 2 steps of separation factor).
Bacon to Eastwood in Mystic River,
Eastwood to Hackman in Unforgiven...or do all players need to be in acting roles?

Caine has been in close to 100 credited film roles - many more uncredited roles, bit parts and TV roles.
Hackman? Roughly 80 film roles - again, not including uncredited parts, TV movies/dramas, etc.
Amazed to learn that Hackman is 3 years older than Caine.
And sad to think he may be done with acting.

This page figures out how many 'steps' from each actor to each other actor, and then does a weighted average to figure out how "close to the center" a particular actor is. The thought being that the centermost actor will have the lowest weighted average of all his links:
http://oracleofbacon.org/oracle/center.html
The list of the 1000 closest to the center is here:
http://oracleofbacon.org/oracle/center_list.html

The problem with the oracle sight is that it uses a lot of actors and actresses that are either uncredited, or most people have never heard of them. Personally, I like to use only recognized actors.

Personally I can think of a few actresses that I would like to use. :)
