Electric boil

I was thinking about putting an electric heating element in a brew pot, and I found a few web sites for the heatstick.
Has anyone made one of these? How well does/did it work out?
I'm skeptical about boiling the wort in a plastic bucket.
And what's the deal with all the epoxy and rtv? That just seems like it's asking for trouble. Why not just slap a cap on the end of the pipe with a hole drilled through and possibly a nut welded to it to except the water heater element?

I was hoping to get some people who have made one to give me there opinion, maybe even give some long term durability reports as that seems to be a problem from the web sites I read.
