I went to my local home brew supply store today. I live in Canada in a town of about 1 million people. This supply store is the only one I have found that stocks base malts and is able to crush them for me.

The owner was telling me that his mill was worn out and he may not replace it. When I asked how he would crush my malt, he replied that I may need to find an alternate malt source. The malts do not add much income to his wine kit supply business, so he may stop stocking them.

Why can't a town of 1 million people support this kind of business? I know that this kind of forum can do a lot to raise awarness of our hobby, but sometimes it feels like a lost cause.

I guess the future may be mail order.

November 1st was Teach a friend to brew day... you gotta be preaching the word brotha!

It's a sad day, but you can't blame a business man for not stocking product that doesn't make him any money.

Probably the only thing you can do is try to help him drum up some business.

I'd probably cry if my LHBS went away :-(

I don't blame him. I blame myself for not drinking enough ;)

That is too bad Jughead. I think part of the problem is that most people just don't want to spend the time on the mashing. I was talking to the owner of another homebrew shop just yesterday in the same city. It used to be great, but now he carries very little in the way of beer making supplies. He does most of his beer business by selling the 16 litres of concentrated wort kits. He still carries some grains and would probably bring them in for a customer. He definately has a mill. I could give you the name of the place if you want, but you would have to talk to the guy to find out what he can do.

Being away from the city I have resigned myself to making extract or concentrated wort beers only, due to frshness issues and lack of local supply.
