View Full Version : Plastic cups you like?...

Solo cups just don't do it for me - I'd love to find a disposable plastic cup that won't foam over every time I pour a beer in. I realize the surface promotes the extra CO2; does anyone have a suggestion? A particular brand of cup that you've had good luck with, maybe? Anyone?

At home-brew judging we always use the very clear plastic cups/glasses. Sorry I can't say who they're made by, but I see them in grocery stores by every brand and, usually, 2 or 3 different sizes.

They do pretty well with the home-brews and don't create an extra abundance of foam.

i was thinking of buying polycarbonate glasses for beer drinking in places I don't want to risk my mugs. It looks like I wasn't too crazy.

fret - just rinse the solo cups with water first

the water will fill most of the nucleation sites that cause the foaming.

Fret, the only other brand name I remember from my days in the business is Sweetheart. I know that there are others but can't pull the names from my puck shaken brain.

Try calling a restaurant supply house or a supplier to ice cream stores. If you want I will see what other brand names there are.

Unfortunately, plastic cups appear to be occupying a prominent spot in my immediate future, but as long as I can get them to not make the beer taste bad, I'm good. Will advise of results of experiment at a later date!

A little bit of face grease on the tip of your finger, from the forehead or side of the nose settles down the foam pretty quick...

The water trick works GREAT, Hogie! Thanks! :D

I've found that I can take a bottle out of the too-cold-for-beer kitchen fridge, fill up the plastic Solo cup with warm water, place the bottle in the cup while it's sitting in the sink, and let the water bring the beer to drinking temp while the water does its molecular thing to the inside of the cup. Wait 30-45 seconds, dump out water, place cup upside down on bottle, get where I'm headed (computer, couch, bed), pop open beer and pour. Terrific!

Bob E., that trick works well for the head... it's not terribly effective on the beer and CO2 stuck to the side of the cup. Plus I try to keep my fingers out of my beer these days. Don't want to take a chance on contaminating the beer - who knows where my fingers have been, or my face, for that matter!

as fret says, that will get rid of the head, but in building the head you're releasing a bunch of co2 and diminishing the carbonation.

Hey, I resemble that remark. I have to admit that I did have several ideas come to mind from reading Fret's post.

I was only referring to the familiar mother's admonition of what to touch and what not to touch. Nothing more.

Also, I just don't care for the idea of sticking my finger in my beer, foam or liquid.

Just to set the record straight. :)

Please Fret, you keep opening the door. One of these I might have to step through.

I tried them and noticed reduce head retention.

Was it the cup or the cop?

You might check with some of the beer distributers. I was somewhere the other night and they served their draught in clear plastic cups that weren't too bad. Of course you may have to look at a Bud Light emblem.

Or Sam's or some Sam's type place may have them. I think I've also seen clear plastic cups in the party/wedding section at Hobby Lobby. In fact I think I'll look next time I'm at Sam's as I prefer clear to the red Solo frat boy kegger cups too.

I knew, Wort, that if someone set one up for you, you'd knock it down. :D
