When my AHS Octoberfest was rocking and rolling through it's primary fermentation the exhaust exiting te airlock smelled like the mucky yeast fallout on the bottom of my carboy except about twice as offensive minus any hopp smells. So my question is.... Shoud a malty fermenting octoberfest smell like my nose is two inches from a hopless glob or has something gone terribley wrong?

Someone posted a similar question earlier and I thought the response that was best was something along the lines of "Those are the smells and nasties that are comong out of your beer and that's a good thing."

Or to quote Shrek, "Better out than in."

So in my worried frnezy over this I decided to rip the lid off and rack to my secondary. Checking to see if the off smell was still there I stuck my snout down and dook a deep whiff... Thank God only the sweet sweet burn of pure Co2 and fresh magical beeriness. All is well for now.

Yeah, Lager yeast really stinks a lot more than ale yeast.

yep lager yeasts throw a lot of sulfur, and that quote was probably mine as I seem to say it quite often around here. Just remember that everything you smell is LEAVING the beer.
